A number of reasons contributed to the cause of the fall of the Roman Republic. One of the reasons were economic struggles. Rome suffered a severe financial crisis through constant wars and the misuse of money from the government. The overbearing taxation and increase had expanded the gap between the wealthy and poor people. In efforts of avoiding the tax officials, the wealthy people abandoned their homes and fled to the countryside and set up self-regulating organizations.
