Essay: Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH)

Great Essays
While some pursue medicine for the paycheck, prestige, or simply to carry on the family business, my desire for pursuing a career in medicine has been driven by another motive entirely. The odds were one out of 15,000 and I was chosen — I was diagnosed with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) at the age of eight. CAH is a genetic disorder that affects the general health, growth, and development of the body. Not only does this condition involve the taking of daily medication for the rest of my life, I am also left with a compromised immune system and chronic fatigue. Despite such a grim prognosis, I found that my CAH was a blessing in disguise. I discovered that I could help others — specifically children and their families — facing diseases …show more content…
Renshaw was that the patient is a the focal point of medicine. On my first day of shadowing, two different patients that I saw spoke very highly of Dr. Renshaw, telling me that I was lucky to be shadowing such a great doctor. One of the patients also told me that Dr. Renshaw keeps them in “good hands.” Another patient said that Dr. Renshaw had influenced her eating and exercise habits for the better. From my own observation, I noticed that he was very kind and patient with those he saw. Dr. Renshaw spoke eloquently when explaining medications and conditions to patients, but he did not do so in a way that belittled them. He was knowledgeable, but spoke on a level that the patient could …show more content…
I enjoyed the patient interaction, whether it be simply conversing about personal affairs or discussing a plan of care for their malady. My shadowing experience allowed me to see that medicine is also a mentally stimulating career, as seen with Dr. Renshaw’s ability to think quickly to both assess the patient’s needs and treat those needs. The compassion, mental capacity, and ability to collaborate with other physicians are all essential qualities to treating patients as a physician. I feel very fortunate for the opportunity to shadow such an excellent physician like Dr. Renshaw through the Physician Shadowing Program. The words of Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen best sum up my attitude toward medicine after my experience in the field thus far: “Medicine offers you a front-row seat on life. Meaning is all around you. When you can see it, it gives you a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to do this

It is hard to deny that the majority of the book demonstrates rather unhealthy doctor-patient relationships because there often is very little reciprocal trust and a most of Grealy’s doctors lack personability. The first step to a favorable doctor-patient relationship is the presence reciprocal trust. The doctor should be able to understand what their patient is telling them and trust that they are being honest. In the same manner, the patient should be able to rely on the decisions made by the doctor and assume that everything that is being done is in the best interest of the patient.…

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia is the overdevelopment of the adrenal glands from birth. In a healthy person, cortisol is used to decrease the release of adrenocorticotropic hormone. ACTH is used by the pituitary gland which stimulates the adrenal gland. However, people with CAH have a genetic limitation where they are unable to produce correct amounts of cortisol. Without cortisol to exert a negative feedback on ACTH, it continues to be secreted causing the adrenal gland to secrete larger amounts of hormones.…

Shadowing a variety of hospitalists gave me the opportunity to observe the broad spectrum of patient care. I witnessed firsthand the anguish and pain associated with the loss of a patient. I learned that while many diagnoses may be identical, no two patients are the same. Additionally I was introduced to an aspect of patient care that often remains unmentioned; the task of updating and completing patients’ medical records which may be a tedious, yet extremely vital aspect of patient care. Overall, my shadowing experiences solidified my decision to continue my journey of becoming a physician to treat patients in all aspects required in medical care.…

The other favorite activity that I have participated in during my high school career is physician shadowing. Through the Health Practicum course offered at Anderson, I have been able to gain invaluable exposure to the medical field and a variety of occupations. Ever since my Honors Anatomy and Physiology course I took sophomore year, my interest in the medical field has grown and developed. Following this course I took Honors Pathophysiology and decided that the next logical course in my health-related progression would be Health Practicum. The shadowing I’ve been able to complete through this course opportunity has helped to solidify my plans for a future in the medical field.…

My most recent medical experience was shadowing at an internal medicine office in my hometown in the summer before my junior year. Due to my dream of becoming a pediatrician, I originally tried to shadow at some pediatric offices but was denied to privacy concerns of parents. I decided to turn to internal medicine next since it is a similar field and environment. I shadowed both a physician and his nurse. I observed the physician and nurse, took notes, and participated in patient care, which was my favorite thing to do.…

My freshman year at the University of Georgia was one that was liberating in an unexpected way; I came into college as an enthusiastic Biology major, excited to start off my pre-med career. I heard about the public health field when taking a sociology course; in the class, we learned about the disparities of health and different factors contributing to the gap between the rich and the poor, and how one’s income affects their health. I took a health and wellness class, and I realized that I was deeply interested in learning more about how I could contribute to this field. My previous experience volunteering in a hospital and shadowing in a private practice gave me two different perspectives on the field of health.…

Because so few conventional medical doctors even acknowledge the existence of AFS, symptoms that overlap with other illnesses, including thyroid insufficiency, are usually regarded as being in the mind of the patient.(1) For many, it is "the hidden disease," and it remains hidden for a number of years, growing more in intensity over time. Some suffer with this condition for over 30 years before taking matters in their own hands with holistic alternative methods. Recurring adrenal crashes take place in advancing stages rendering the person totally debilitated.…

Eventually, I’d like to see myself become an internist or family doctor with my own practice. One of the most important things I have developed as a tutor is patience. This virtue can be underestimated. One must also have the ability to communicate clearly and concisely. Internists serve as starting point for the plan of care, and it’s essential for one to have a reliable, trustworthy primary care doctor who isn’t afraid of explaining things thoroughly and kindly.…

This summer I completed my field experience by shadowing a physician assistant named Adam Strantz. He works in a primary care office in Fremont, Michigan. The office, Spectrum Health Medical Group, was fairly small and included only two PAs and one physician. Before starting my shadowing, I set a few goals for myself to learn during my time there. Each and every one of my goals were met through my time there.…

The field is always growing and changing and I yearn to undertake in this lifetime of learning. I find it so exciting that one day I can serve people by improving their health and do so using cutting-edge technologies, some which may have yet to be invented. I may not be able to change the world on the whole, but small actions can have a big influence. I look forward to creating a positive impact on a personal level, treating holistically and compassionately, as this is a career path that calls for an understanding of the human experience as much as it does an understanding of the human body. It is this interplay of science and service that makes medicine so unique, so compelling, and so fit a profession for me to…

Adrenal incidentaloma (AI) refers to an otherwise unsuspected adrenal mass found in up to 5 % of patients undergoing radiological imaging. As high as one in five incidentalomas are functional; hypersecretion of cortisol causing Cushing’s or Subclinical Cushing’s Syndrome (SCS), catecholamines leading to pheochromocytoma, aldosterone resulting in primary aldosteronism (Conn’s syndrome), androgens leading to virilization of patients, and in very rare cases renin manifesting as secondary aldosteronism. Renin is a proteolytic enzyme that is synthesized by juxtaglomerular cells. Its release into the bloodstream can be triggered by sympathetic stimulus, decreased arterial blood pressure monitored via baroreceptors or decreased sodium levels in the…

Medical professionals debate the best strategies for effective communication, with the knowledge that each doctor must develop their own style of communication. However many organizations have defined key elements of communication skills needed for improved healthcare. These skills include but are not limited to effective listening, effective questioning skills, effective explanatory skills while providing information, counselling and educating patients; and making informed decisions based on patient information and preference. * The use of both patient and doctor centred interview styles are relevant to the healthcare system. This is in no way saying one method is wrong and the other right, however, doctors should have the skill to distinguish when each method should be used.…
