There are many reasons rehabilitation can benefit society, one of them is that once they are rehabilitated we will no longer be spending tax money to support them and it is possible for them to get a job and give back to the economy. It will also prevent the offender from recommitting as they addressed the root of the issue. For instance, if they were depressed and taking ecstasy then rehabilitation would help them find other outlets and keep them from breaking the law. This could also work for if someone got a DUI they could be an alcoholic, if they solved the alcoholism instead of just locking them away then they won’t drink and drive again. Rehabilitation can help the individual become a functioning member of society again, learning how to hold a job or how to act around others. I believe learning to adjust to society again is one of the biggest challenges they face because the way they interact with other prisoners and guards is very different than how you act towards friends and

Once balance is restored, the chances of the prisoner re-offending are diminished (Inayatullah, 2011). In contrast, there is the punishment model. Inayatullah (2011) states that the argument is that all the rights are given to the offender and the victim has none. Therefore in this approach, the best way to reduce present day and future crimes is to keep serious offenders in jail. Evidence shows that twenty-five percent of criminal activity can be reduced by lengthy prison sentences.…

Stanford University law professor Herbert Packer’s models analyze two contrasting standpoints of the way the criminal justice system is, or should strive to, be. The two split positions charted by the Crime Control and Due Process models seek to describe perhaps the two most prominent positions in regards to the power and influence of the criminal justice system: that the safety of the community should be valued over all else, or that the rights of the individual are the most important values to uphold. These ideological conflicts remain the forefront of problems within the criminal justice system, and understanding each persuasion is essential to analyzing and overcoming differences in each stage of the criminal justice process. The Crime…

Mass incarceration has created racial discrepancies among those being incarcerated. Many studies have been conducted to study the causes of these discrepancies and almost all of these studies have found that African Americans and other minority groups accounts for the vast majority of the prison population. In 1991 Albonetti found on her study that African Americans are more likely to be convicted and received longer sentences than their Caucasian counterparts (Kamalu, 2010, p. 2). Another study by Spohn found that when African Americans are male, unemployed, young, and the offense is not serious, then they are more likely to be convicted than Caucasians that fit the same characteristics of those African Americans (Kamalu, 2010, p. 3).…

There are several benefits to prioritizing rehabilitation, one major benefit is the amount of money to be saved. The imprisonment of nearly 3 million people has ran up a massive cost to the U.S. government and in turn the american people. Rehabilitation gives our country a chance to start moving forward in that respect. In San Francisco, a prison moved towards rehabilitation in dealing with its inmates and in turn this new program “ saved the taxpayers $4 for every $1 spent on it, since the lower reincarceration rate saved roughly $30,000 a year per person.” ( The New York Times).…

If offenders learn how to care for themselves for when they are out of prison it may decrease the population in prisons. There could also be a decrease in prison population by sending offenders to rehab centers. Craig Jones and Don Weatherburn explains, “the best adult based rehabilitation programs, such as intensive treatment based supervision programs, can be expected to reduce offending by approximately 16 17 per cent at a cost of slightly more than $US7,000 per offender” (20). Sending offenders to rehab centers would also cost less than sending them to prisons. Craig Jones and Don Weatherburn explains, “Annual cost of imprisoning an adult offender is about $271 per day, or more than $100,000 over the course of a year” (22).…

The idea of whether or not rehabilitation in prison really works, depends on who you ask, or what statistics you read. From my experience, as a career law enforcement officer, my first thought on this subject would be that no, rehabilitation in prison does not work. I have arrested numerous offenders during my career, and many of them were repeat offenders who had previously spent time in prison. That is my first thought, and for many offenders, this may be true, although I know some who have done well since their release. One in particular, went to prison on a drug charge, and he turned his life around, and has been drug, and crime free since his release.…

All throughout the country, there has been a controversial discussion on the subject of how prisons should be used. People are arguing if prisons should be used for punishment or should prisons be utilized to rehabilitate the inmates? There are many people that think that punishment is the best answer because these criminals need to be taught a lesson for what they have done; although I would argue that this is not completely true. When criminals are punished it only makes them more hostile and anxious, which does not lead to any improvements for these inmates (Day).…
