Abstract
This study takes a look into the reappraisal ability of several age groups in order to determine whether its development proceeds linearly or in a nonlinear fashion. Cognitive reappraisal in the study of psychology is an emotion regulation strategy used by us humans that involves changing the direction of an emotional response by reinterpreting the meaning of the emotional stimulus or incentive. …show more content…
Behavioral studies conducted on the regulation habits of emotion in children and adolescents revealed that some regulation strategies are more adaptive than others, just as they are in adults. It is unknown whether the development of reappraisal ability is made linearly, like the development of core cognitive abilities, or in a nonlinear fashion (with respect to adolescents), like the development of social cognitive abilities. This study suggests that (i) engagement of the cognitive control parts of reappraisal increases linearly with age and (ii) adolescents may not normally recruit regions associated with mental state attribution, but (iii) this can be reversed with reappraisal …show more content…
Of these, twenty-one participants were female and seventeen were male. Although all analyses treated age as an independent variable, figures are displayed in groups of older children (10-13; N=12), adolescents (14-17; N=10) and young adults (18-23; N=16). There were guidelines set when searching for potential participants, excluding all who: (i) were left-handed, (ii) below 10 or above 22 years of age, (iii) not native English speakers, (iv) have current or past diagnosis of neurological or psychiatric disorder, (v) had a history of head trauma, (vi) were pregnant, (vii) currently used psychoactive medication or (viii) had any non-MRI compatible conditions. All participants provided a written
