Reaping In The Hunger Games

1. The reaping is an opportunity to keep the population well. Twelve through eighteen-year olds gather together to begin a Hunger Game. There is one girl and boy chosen to fight to the death and the last one standing wins. In paragraph 7 it states, “The reaping is a good opportunity for the Capitol to keep tabs on the population as well. Twelve- through eighteen-year-olds are herded into roped areas marked off by ages…” Katniss thinks that Prim is safe from the reaping because she is one out of the thousands of people and it is her first time entering the reaping. The events that led to the Hunger Games are in this order, Panem rose out of the ashes of North America, there were droughts, storms, fires, and the sea that swallow much of the land. The last of the survivors created Panem a “shining” capitol and thirteen districts. Then there was the Dark Days when the districts rebelled against the capital. Twelve were defeated the thirteenth destroyed. The Treaty of Treason gave new laws to keep peace, and gave them the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games are a yearly reminder that the capital is supreme, one girl and boy are taken from each district and put in a arena where they fight to the death. In paragraph eight it states, “He tells of the history of Panem, the country that rose up out of the ashes of a place that was once called North America. He lists the disasters, the droughts, the storms, the fires, the encroaching seas that swallowed up so much of the land, the brutal war for what little sustenance remained...The Treaty of Treason gave us the new laws to guarantee peace and, as our yearly reminder that the Dark Days must never be repeated, it gave us the Hunger Games.” This shows that the Hunger Games is a yearly reminder of the Dark Days and that they must never be
