At first she referred to the wallpaper as such plain ugly and very distasteful, but as her condition progressed the wallpaper soon began to dominate and take over the narrator 's imagination and mind. At this point we are seeing the narrator leaving the real world and been taken forcefully by her own mind and imagination into a world, which she created herself. The detachment from the reality has serious damaging effects to the narrator’s imagination. “ There are things in the wallpaper that nobody knows but me, or ever will. Behind that outside pattern the dim shapes get clearer every day.” (Gilman pg 231).
