I went to the film screening of “Real Women Have Curves” on October 5th, 2016 from 3:30pm-5:00pm in the Pedroso Center, B-159. The event was directed by Mary Kroeck, who is also directing the play in December. The story and screenplay was by Josefina Lopez, the film how ever was directed by Patricia Cardoso. The initial release date of the film was October 18, 2002. Since I was going to read about it for my Intro to Communication class, I thought I should see the film and experience it in a different form. The story really captivated me, it was about a first-generation Latina who struggles to balance her family 's expectations and cultural norms with her dream of a college education.

The movie focuses on a girl named “Anna”, short for Anita,18, and her sister Estella, 29. The movie is set in Los Angeles, California where Anna goes to Beverly Hills High-school. After Anna 's last day of school her mother made her work in a sweatshop because Anna quit her job at a burger joint. She wanted to attend college but she didn’t have enough money so she worked with her mother and sister in a sowing

While discussing it, we looked at different points of view and we shared our ideas and thoughts on the movie. The event also allowed me to relate to other women who were playing the characters in the play. I also got to meet the cast and we talked about how they felt playing the character. I then got to share my experience with not being able to fit into my cultural standards. It was very eye-opening that other people do face the same issues that I do. It allowed me to connect to other people in such a deep and meaningful way. I plan on attending the play in December with my class and I will definitely be checking out more film screenings. I had a really great time because I got to meet new people, and make new

I have seen a good amount of plays in a number of different venues but this is the first college performance I have ever experienced and it surprised me, both because of the acting and portrayal quality. It appeared that Louis Nowra, Cosi’s playwright, was trying to challenge our perspective of “insane” people and get across the message that they may be more alike us than we are willing to believe. The director, Steven Pearson, seemed to be trying to convey this message with the simplistic approach to the set and really trying to get the actors with connect with the audience and make us feel for them. I think they cast and production team were able to execute the play and portray the message quite well and I left feeling like I really did…
