My social issue is on gender roles in society. I am looking at the stigmatization and social construction of gender roles. When it comes to the "real, tangible, social consequences" of race and ethnicity, minorities tend to be more oppressed when it comes to stereotypes of men and women. Mexican women are taught at a young age to be caregivers to their siblings and to take on the “women’s work”. Many other cultures follow the same philosophy that women have their place and men have theirs. Minorities have fewer opportunities than white men and women. On covers of magazines most family magazines portray a white family with a husband, mother and children all smiling. Whereas on very few magazines light skinned African Americans are seen as having a child but no father in the picture. It’s very rare to see an African American father or even Mexican family on a family magazine. According to society the ideal family is white. On TV shows like Cops, most of the time it captures dark skin African Americans committing crimes. When in fact, most public shootings that take place are conducted by white males. There is a sense of power over another race/ethnicity in our society. We socially create beliefs in which certain stereotypes fit with men and women of color. In rap videos most of the dancers in the background are African American or Mexican. The women dancing in the background are portrayed a sex objects. Society, another institution, also portrays white women as more sophisticated than an African American or Hispanic. One thing I found interesting the other day I was shopping at toys r’ us for my little cousins birthday and I was looking at the toys. On a cleaning set toy (toy that comes with a vacuum, mop, etc.) there was a Hispanic little girl on the advertise box, I then looked at another toy which was doctor dress up and it showed a white little girl on the advice package.
