More students have been using the Internet to assist with projects, assignments and homework. Although the Internet is an effective tool in which individuals can use to communicate and study, it creates problems in terms of Internet safety and low grades.
The Internet encourages communication among family, friends and classmates. Although the Internet allows students to connect with their classmates to do group work at home, it also acts as a mode in which students can bring school social problems home. Due to the increasing availability of wireless Internet in areas such as libraries, coffee shops and community centers, students are now able to access information virtually anywhere. However, due to the fact that the Internet can be accessed anywhere at any time, students develop the idea that they can use their electronic devices to connect to the Internet during a test or exam. J. Trushell and colleagues suggests that the Internet encourages students to discover other means of completing work than doing it themselves, as there is no one to monitor their behavior (137). Without the Internet, students would have to challenge themselves to do research without the temptation of plagiarism by copying and pasting from online sources. The Internet provides a wide range of information that assists students with projects and assignments. Although the information students need is readily available, the information may not always be valid or reliable. Search engines typically find the most reliable information, however, “websites can attract the attention of more search engines by placing certain keywords or phrases at or near the top of their Web pages in attempts to attract more ‘hits’” (David H. Brandin and Daniel C. Lynch). By doing this, websites that are not reliable are displayed on the first page of an Internet search and are used by most individuals, even though they may not provide the reliability that is required. Despite the fact that the Internet acts as a great tool for schoolwork, it can lead to poor grades because of misunderstanding, cheating and lack of creativity from the students.
