Real Demon Poem

Red eyes, bull horns, razor sharp canines

Isn’t that how a demon is defined?

I believed the same, I was afraid of the dark

Silly me believed the light would drive him off.

But mind you I was young, naïve even

How could I have known the real demon?

Now that I am older, I have met him in person

For now he dwells inside me

No horns, no teeth, still terrifies me.

He feeds off my fears, my insecurities help him grow

One day, I am afraid, he will devour me whole.

Cause he is growing in the darkness,

The darkness of my mind,

While I desperately try to turn on the light.

But it’s harder than you think, I kid you not

He holds on to me with all that he’s got.

Don’t waste your time searching, you won’t see any scars

Some wounds are such, they don’t leave a mark.

It’s all inside your head.”

I would have loved if that were true, but I cannot lie to myself.

My dead teacher, he speaks to me from the grave,

He is the only one who gets my deal,

“Of course it’s happening inside your head,

But why on earth should that mean it’s not real?”

I don’t know if these words reassure or petrify me,

Though I know he’s there, I see the way out nowhere

The demon, he’s satisfied, he’s laughing with glee

No horns, no teeth, still terrifies me.Red eyes, bull horns, razor sharp canines

Isn’t that how a demon is defined?

I believed the same, I was afraid of the dark

Silly me believed the light would drive him off.

But mind you I was young, naïve even

The poem “I will put Chaos into fourteen lines” by Edna St. Vincent Millay portrays the speaker as someone who is trying to make order out of chaos in her life by effectively using personification, an assertive tone, and caesura to make her point. The speaker uses capitalization when referring to Chaos as if he is a human being that she knows but seems to be upset with or frustrated at. She wants to put him into “fourteen lines and keep him there” (lines 1,2) as if she believes he is the cause of something evil that happened to her. The fourteen lines could mean the fourteen lines of the sonnet which have strict rules to adhere to in order to successfully write one well.…

After all, she was cursed. And not with blazing speed, she found.…

The link between magic and song was widely recognized in antiquity. Besides the fact that several literary texts, from Homer’s time and on, can enrich our knowledge of ancient Greek magical practice, there are also fragments of literary texts which contain a specific kind of magical language, the language of curses. Curses (ἀραί or κατάραι) were utterances consigning, or supposed or intended to consign, (a person or a thing) to the spiritual and temporal evil, the vengeance of a deity, the blasting of malignant fate. The main medium of cursing was always language, and sometimes even poetic language.…

It is dark. It always is. My mind, like the hell-lit cave, is ignorant to life outside of darkness. The Victims Poem Analysis

Upon initial reading, “The Victims” by Sharon Olds seems to be a poem that paints the picture of a life of abuse; starting from the dawning of the exploitation and arching over into the life of the abused following the maltreatment. In the work, it is made to be believed that the clear victims of the poem are the speaker and their family—which is a rightful and obvious assumption—but there is another victim that is not as prevalent as that of the speaker and their family: the speaker’s father. After a second read, it is made evidently apparent that although the work does focus on the speaker and their family as the victims of the poem, the ideal that the father is also a victim is explored. Since the father is depicted as an abuser, it is seen…

The creature’s appearance in this novel has caused him a lot of pain. He believes that’s the reason why humans won’t accept him, even if he’s kind-hearted. The creature knowing, even if he does something good, he would still be punished such as when, “I was scarcely hid when a young girl came running towards the spot where I was concealed [...] when suddenly her foot slipped, and she fell into the rapid stream. I rushed from my hiding place and [...] saved her [...] when the man saw me draw near, he aimed a gun, [...] and fired. [...] Inflamed by pain, I vowed eternal hatred and vengeance to all mankind”(120-121).…

The World’s Wife is a collection of poetry that successfully challenges society’s preconceptions of what it means to be a woman. While the female voice is often silenced, Duffy focuses on the women who were in the midst of male-centric stories in Biblical, mythological and fairytale narratives. Some may argue that the expectations of women are completely subverted in poems such as The Devil’s Wife, in which the maternal and nurturing image of a woman is replaced by the disturbing portrayal of the infamous child serial killer Myra Hindley. Alternatively, some feminine qualities are also explored in this poem, such as a woman’s dependence on men, as demonstrated by Hindley’s twisted, passionate love for Ian Brady.…
