Presidents like Ronald Reagan and Theodore Roosevelt advocated for a strong military. They believed in the concept, “peace through strength”. Reagan felt strongly about building up our military. Many tanks, planes, and ships are owned by the military thanks to Reagan. The Reagan administration also brought up some of the best planes, the F-15 and the F-16 which are still used today. He spent at most $456.5 on defense billion in 1987 (in projected 2005 dollars). When the Cold war broke out, Reagan became tough with the Soviets threatening to use military force if necessary. He began a defensive anti-missile program in space. It was called the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI). Its purpose was to target and neutralize incoming Soviet missiles. It is defensive and we don’t go out looking for wars. We also, in the past, have helped other countries with our military like Israel.
