Ready Set Solve Challenge Case Study

The Capital Region District’s (CRD) Ready Set Solve Challenge uses their website and social media sites to promote the involvement of post-secondary students in solving climate challenges. Specifically, this event provides students from Royal Roads University, Camosun College, and the University of Victoria with a chance to solve sustainability challenges with organizations devoted to combatting climate change (CRD, 2013). On the website, the CRD promotes the event by summarizing and reporting on the results from the previous year. CRD (2013) mentions a few of the solutions that students in the competition derived, including a youth climate action summer camp, a natural outdoor playground, and a bicycle infrastructure. This strategy represents an effective approach to promoting future challenges. First of all, the announcement of previous results motivates current students to enter the challenge for a chance to win the contest. Furthermore, by mentioning …show more content…
For example, the idea of a bicycle infrastructure in the city of Esquimalt may encourage other cities to implement similar ideas. From this perspective, the CRD website effectively promotes the challenge by providing complete and objective information as well as motivating students, professors, municipalities and organizations to become involved. In addition to their website, the CRD also promotes their Ready Set Solve Challenge on social media. Different Facebook pages affiliated with the CRD and the three participating colleges have created posts alerting students of the event and encouraging them to join the challenge. It is impossible for the youth to escape Earth’s contaminated environment, which will be their harsh reality for decades to come. Maintaining an eco-friendly lifestyle is nearly impossible in today’s world due to society’s constant industrialization and innovations. However, it is possible to significantly reduce the level of mistreatment and strain induced on Canada’s ecosystems. Within the St. Brother Andre community there is no active club protecting the environment for future years even though as Catholics we are called to protect God’s creation. Although all schools produce litter and waste resources, it is possible for the school community to be more environmentally friendly by creating a group that continually strives for reducing their…

For my Shark Chat topic I would like to speak about citizen science and how people, regardless of age, major, or qualification can participate and become citizen scientists themselves. Citizen science is when local residents contribute to data collection of their environment without having to be actual scientists. I first learned about citizen science through Key Biscayne's Citizen Scientist Project, which is a non-profit organization that promotes citizen science among the community with free lectures that focus on a variety of scientific topics, beach cleanups, waters testing events, and youth fishing clinics. Through my internship with them, I have experienced first hand why citizen science is so important to environmental sustainability.…

I consider myself a leader with unblemished character who can positively make a difference in people’s lives. I do not hesitate to act or engage on issues that I believe are important for an individual or team to be successful. On one occasion, our Army JROTC community blood drive was subject to failure through lack of organization. I observed the Company Commander not properly delegating tasks, and many actions were not being accomplished. When he initially disregarded my valid concerns, I informed my JROTC leadership through the proper chain of command to intervene and ensure tasks were delegated and completed.…

(Scottish Environmental Protection Agency) The massive piles of food waste are one of the leading sources of man-made methane gas production. As Jared Diamond points out in his work “The World as Polder: What Does It Mean To Us Today,” we, as humans, are “the cause of our environmental problems, [and] we are the ones in control of them.” Since universities are contributing to the problem of large scale food waste, they can also take control and work to create more sustainable practices while also helping students through the transition from high school to…

The final four Thursday evening SUST lectures were successful conclusions to a year of interesting, compelling and self-shaping lectures as a part of the SUST 1000/1001 classes. Again, the different backgrounds of the presenters, along with some dynamic presenting styles, kept the lectures engaging and relevant to a variety of aspects of the SUST program and my life. Despite the different topics, I found that all 4 lectures touched upon the idea of communities, as being central to sustainability, over current values of capitalism. The values of learning, sharing and growing (though not always economically) are imperative within and beyond the confines of communities when it comes to making significant change. As I near the end of this year of studies, I am leaving with this sense of the importance of community, of working together, as key when looking at a sustainable future.…

Throughout my life I have experienced many events have laid down the foundation for the future I am building. One of the most influential and eye-opening was a trip I took to Yosemite National Park during my junior year of high school. The trip was offered to high school students in Northern California, provided by the McConnell Foundation- an independent foundation that awards grants to nonprofit organizations, public education, and government entities. The goal of the trip was to educate students on the importance of the national park, learn about its ecology, explore its natural wonders, and to interact with and meet other students.…
