During an interview with the author of Ready Player One, Ernest Cline, he talks about how he grew up during the 80’s and without proper parental guidance he turned to 80’s movies, video games, and TV shows for entertainment. This later developed his love for 80’s pop culture as he feels nostalgic for his childhood (Mother Jones & LA Times). It seems that without Cline’s lack of parental guidance, which lead him to have such an experience with 80’s pop culture, Ready Player One wouldn’t have existed. The book was just Cline’s childhood collected into a story based off his life. Within the book, there is a character named James Halliday, he is the creator of the Oasis, and the gamemaster of the easter egg hunt. During the search for the easter egg, Wade Watts does research on Halliday and he discovers that his childhood revolved around the 80’s, had a big obsession with 80’s pop culture, and he played D&D as a child.This was expressed multiple times during the book, as it played an important role within the plot of the story, also there were many points in the book in which background information is given about the Halliday or the Oasis (Cline). Cline and Halliday both have such similar qualities. Both lived and grew up in the same generation, both share the love for 80’s pop culture, and both played D&D during their childhood. But in Halliday’s case, he has passed away and that he is hosting a gigantic easter egg, while Cline is a writer. In conclusion, Ernest Cline and James Halliday can be comparable to each other and Halliday is based off of Cline’s personality and modern day
