Now among gods and mortal men, she was the most intelligent. But when she was about to give birth to the clear-eyed goddess Athena, Zeus slyly deceived her with flattering words and lodged her in his own belly. Earth and starry Heaven had advised him to do this, so that no other would hold power over the eternal gods in place of Zeus. Metis was destined to bear very shrewd children, first the clear-eyed Tritogeneia (Athena), equal to her father in strength and in wise counsel. Then later she was to bear a son of domineering spirit, king of gods and men. But Zeus lodged Metis in his own belly first, so that the goddess could advise him on both good and evil” (Steele and Alwa 2014, …show more content…
He swallowed Metis while she was still pregnant with Athena, just so she could not tell him what to do. Instead Zeus gave birth to Athena and was the goddess of wisdom and wisdom of war strategies. My interpretation is that Zeus was afraid that if he did not swallow Metis, he would not be the wisest of the gods, Metis and Athena would be the wisest. I think the reason why Zeus made Athena remain a virgin is because if she was to have a generation of children and some were female, the male gods and men would see that as a huge threat in losing power. For example, when he is debating to save his son Sarpedon, Hera “urged [him]” (XVI, 528) to “leave Sarpedon there to die” (XVI, 535). “Zeus the father of men and gods complied at once” (XVI, 545). Regardless, Zeus still holds superior power over Hera. This forces Hera to advance in war by using her femininity and sexuality to manipulate Zeus. “Hera seduced great Zeus to lose himself in love [and sleep]” (XIV, 427-8) to advance the Achaeans in war.…

Again, Zeus sends Hermes to deliver a message. Hermes is sent to tell Kalypso that Zeus commands her to allow Odysseus to leave her island and continue his journey to his home. In retort to this command, Kalypso points out a double standard that exists between the gods and the goddesses: "You are hard-hearted, you gods, and jealous beyond all creatures / beside, when you are resentful toward the goddesses" (Homer 91). The double standard that Kalypso points out is that the gods are permitted to sleep around with mortal women, but if a goddess sleeps with a mortal man, the gods intervene and stop it. This double standard can exist because it is the gods who possess more power when compared to the goddesses.…

In this myth the gods are no longer against man but against each other and are power hungry. Powell points out that the gods act as “tricksters”, “Ogres”, “sexual victims”, and are “dangerous enemies”. The gods are still vengeful and ready to strike down anyone that threatens them, especially when it comes to their power. Zeus is especially fearful of Prometheus because he too is very wise. He is truly a great threat to Zeus and his top spot as god of the gods.…

This shows that Athena will almost always favor men over women, making her even more so the most androgynous Goddess. This makes her androgynous because most people and Gods tend to favor their own gender but Athena does otherwise. Athena thinks this way because she never had a mother of her own as she was born out of Zeus’s head as a grown woman. This meant that she never had a motherly role model in her life, causing her to lack many of the womanly qualities and showing more masculine characteristics.…

But I will give men as the price for fire an evil thing in which they may all be glad of heart while they embrace their own destruction. (Works and Days, ll. 54-59) While the biblical God is acting out of compassion for his creation and caring for his well-being, Zeus is generally uninterested in humanity’s well-being, intervening when it serves his purposes, and vengeful when crossed, even when humanity themselves have done nothing to earn his ire. Both women are warned not to perform their respective misdeed, but there are key differences in how and why the women succumb.…
