Reading The Sandman And The Wolves In The Walls

Decent Essays
I really liked this class overall. I liked the creative project at the end of semester, it would be neat to have other assignments like that. I liked reading the Neil Gaiman works, but I think this class would benefit from studying other “popular” authors who deal with real-world themes. I really liked reading The Sandman and The Wolves in the Walls and finding merit in works like graphic novels and children’s books. I think that reading some of those works would be greatly beneficial for next year’s class. I think having the group project as one of the first assignments was really good, because it allowed us to work with classmates and get a feel of how you grade assignments. I think that the most important thing that should be kept is the

Artist Statement At the start of the semester, entering English 416, I felt very nervous and unworthy of being in the class. I was intimidated by great writers who wrote so easily and who I don’t doubt will be published authors someday. This course was my first upper level English class and I felt unqualified as the class felt like a whole different ballgame…

Unrecognizable familiarity is truly uncanny in Paul Berry’s “The Sandman” supported by the work of Sigmund Freud. Instead of focusing purely on aesthetic, Freud analyzes themes present in literature that make the reader anxious. Freud concludes that the uncanny is not only frightening, but familiar changed into the unfamiliar which is evident in Paul Berry's "The Sandman." Freud explains that an “uncanny effect is produced by effacing the distinction between imagination and reality.” The short film's protagonist attempts to rationalize the happenings in the house, but is unable to do so.…

Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 1010 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. When I first started this course, I was scared and didn’t really know what to expect. I branched out to different styles and types of essays as well as incorporating outside sources into my work. When I received my first essay back with the feedback and the grade, I realized that I was not a really good writer.…

I faced the internal struggle of being a good group member and being a good student. I struggled with communicating the urgency of completing the project to the rest of the group and not annoying everyone on the group chat. In the end, this challenge was solved by my fellow group members completing (thankfully and barely) before the deadline. If I could do the project over I would be less passive aggressive and talk to my group members about completing the work together to get it done earlier. Looking past all of my complaints and challenges this group assignment proved to be helpful and educational.…

group activities and team projects students can have self-reflection on how well they put input into the work. Teachers can also reflect of what works with groups and what kind of roles the students excel at. I also learned and will implement team project processing forms. The forms are filled out by each team member and they determine how well they and their team worked together. It can also have the students come up with ways that the team can work better next time.…

How would I describe this class? I would probably say without hesitation that this class is grueling, exhausting, and stressful (just kidding). Although, I would have to admit that somewhere in the back of my mind, I realize how valuable a class like this is. Nowadays, everywhere I look, people are glued to their phones or other devices; when I was in middle school before everyone had a smartphone, people actually read books in their free time. It is quite sad how many students of this generation will not pick up a book unless it is assigned to them.…

I have personally learned many things from this course. This course is one step up from the previous writing course I have completed and it shows in the requirements from the essays. I enjoyed the class discussions. To me though the most important thing I have learned would be to write my essays and have it proof read and improved as much as possible as well as the need for this when prompts are as open as they were here. This has been taught to us this class many times through many different methods.…

Throughout this semester I feel I have learned a lot about history. I feel i've learned more in this class than I did in my high school history classes. Some things I really enjoyed about this class would be the format of this class I liked your lectures and I found taking notes to be very helpful especially when it was time to take a test. I enjoy how you structured your lectures according to when the events took place I think going in order according to time makes it easier to remember. I think when you write the topics and outline of your lecture on the board and then talk about it is helpful because it makes it easy to follow along with what you're talking about.…

At the beginning of the semester, I viewed myself as a creative writer. After attending this class I realized that there is a lot more that goes into writing an essay, or a research paper, than just creativity alone. I have learned that it is very important to be aware of my strengths and weaknesses in my writing. Taking this class has helped me understand the strengths and weaknesses in my writing skills, and it has given me the opportunity to strengthen the areas in which I was weak. An example of this is that I have become aware of my grammar and spelling errors as the semester progressed.…
