There will always be people who are anti-religion or anti-gay. They will hate you even if you aren’t part of the group, but support the group. Back in the time this book takes place in, the society was against blacks. Because Atticus was defending a black man in court he was hated by society and called a disgrace to his family. I much prefer Scout’s definition of a fine family to Aunt Alexandra’s. Scout said that a fine family was one that did the best with what they had, and Aunt Alexandra said it was a family that had been living in one place for a long time. In my family, Aunt Alexandra’s definition makes us a fine family but I don’t think it does. All of my mom’s side of the family lives in various clusters in different parts of Canada. But just because they live in the same place does not mean that they are a fine family. Alcoholism, drug addiction, and depression rage through my family and there is a decent amount of arguing. But according to Scout’s definition, my family at home would be considered a fine family because we have been doing the best with the little we have. About six years ago my mom kicked my dad out of the house because he was, and still is, a crack addict. A few years before this, he was at rehab in Mexico and had two heart attacks. Because he was out of the country his insurance was not valid, so that cost us a substantial amount of money. Before the divorce was finalized, my dad was still connected to the joint bank account so he stole our life savings. Since that, we have been fairly poor but we still do the best with what we have, and that’s what I think makes us a fine
