According to Cooper et al (2012), “with reading intervention, we don’t wait for a problem to occur; instead we recognize that a student is beginning to struggle and provide the necessary instruction to help him or her catch up” (p. 347). Schools have adapted a reading intervention procedure called RTI (Response to Intervention). RTI provides multiple tiers of support for reading difficulties. “RTI is designed for the use in both general education and special education, creating a well-integrated system of instruction and intervention guided by student outcome data” (Cooper et al, 2012, p. 347). There are three tiers of intervention, tier one is taught in the classroom and is directly related to the core instruction; tier two is taught in small groups or individually either in or out of the classroom; it designed to improve students reading levels at a fast pace. The third tier is designed for students with a reading disability. A reading specialist provides the instruction on a one-on-one basis. According to Cooper et al (2012), “struggling readers need both core instruction and acceleration intervention to make more than adequate yearly progress”

Be sure to model the text to give the students an appropriate example of how the text should sound before the student makes their attempt. Have the student repeat the story as many times as needed until the text is error free. Be sure to encourage the student and provide feedback to enable the student to learn from their errors. Although studies have indicated that best results are seen when this strategy is performed by an adult, RR can be used in whole group, small group, or with a peer. If you are to perform this strategy with a peer leading the instructional aspect, have the non-reading student take notes and…

As a new teacher working with lower performing ELLs, I was looking for that one particular tip or strategy that would improve their fluency levels in reading. My students were borderline students and were constantly exposed to failure. Many of these students had poor reading strategies and some were too intimidated to read beyond the first few sentences. I started with the most logical starting point - the text. Many textbooks often have more texts than are needed or texts which may not be suitable in one way or another.…

It is separated into three Tiers to separate student’s abilities so that the teacher is capable of accommodating her student's needs. Tier 1 focuses on developing the students reading abilities and preventing learning problems. Tier 2 focuses on struggling readers and extending the instruction to help the students reach grade level as soon as possible. Tier 3 is referred to as more intense instruction, and depending on the child’s improvement, it may result in the diagnosis of a reading disability.…
