During early childhood my parents provided me with a number of pictures books. Some of my favorites included Clifford the Big Red Dog and his silly antics, Peter Rabbit, and Amelia Bedelia. I had quite the collection of these books growing up. Being that my interest level was high in these books, my parents tried to keep the interest alive by growing my collection. I remember laboring through the books and assignments so that I could get back to my independent reading book. Since reading for pleasure was supported at home, I was able to continue to feed my love for reading outside of the mandatory novel studies. I can understand, though, how independent reading wanes in the middle and high school levels as reading selections are made for students, and the fun is taken out of the activity by overanalyzing every piece of the book and piling on the comprehension assignments. Reading then becomes associated with these things and the motivation to read for pleasure decreases.
