Research Question
Does reading to my child help to improve his reading ability?
Operationalization
Problem
Research exists for a variety of reasons, some political and some for educational purposes. For me, it was necessary to distinguish how I could assist my son, Austin, with his education. My son suffers with a disability and has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) in place. This means my son requires extra attention in certain areas similar to reading and math. Austin struggles in all areas in school and remains in a specialized education classroom. Recently I went to a parent teacher conference, this is where his teacher informed me he is persistently suffering more in reading than any other subject. She instructed me that I read to him to improve his reading ability. As a research analyst one will state the research question and why it remains a problem, come up with an objective, calculate how the issue will be measured, collect the data, and use a benchmark to determine the success or failure. Although, my son is in fourth grade, he reads at a second grade reading level. He remains

Since we are starting at the end of fourth grade level Austin should be able to read 140 words per minute and at the end fifth grade be up to 160 words per minute. Obviously that would be too high of an expectation at the end of fifth grade to go up by 60 words per minute. I would call it a therapeutic succeed if Austin were at least at 140 words per minute by the end of fifth grade, which would only make him one year behind. I would call it an experimental success if Austin reached at least 120 words per minute. In the same fashion as a parent I would accept his reading to be slower but his comprehension to be at least 75 percent. Being able to retain what he is reading is also a significant part of his

One of my hypotheses as to why he has the comprehension issue is because he is way too focused on being able to pronounce the word correct that he does not pay too much attention to what he is reading. Another area that he seems to need help in is when he gets frustrated when he is not able to read a word correctly or does not know what the word means. He tends to become upset and want to stop reading all together. This is a big problem because I seem to be spending more time trying to engage him in being able to read again than actually reading itself. Other than these two main areas, Juan seems to be doing very well in his reading based on his age and the grade in which he is on.…

The importance of research is critical pivotal in my discovery of what it has to offer and the significance it plays in higher education. Although I have completed one year in the doctoral program, I find myself questioning processes and approaches strategically, examining the quality of the data of new concepts Central Valley College puts into practice. I have found that educators have been defrauded by the same sales tactics found on infomercials where “you too can teach a child to read in as few as five minutes a day.” Duke (2011) describes the phrase research based as the term used to increase the influence of a methodology or product. To have a better understanding of inquiry and its purpose, it is important to ask the right questions of the research clarifying the validity and significance of its usefulness.…
