My First Language Experience Essay

Improved Essays
The most memorable moment I had encountered that challenged my ability to read or write was when I first started learning English. I moved to America when I was eight, I did not understood what was happening at the time and was just going along with whatever my parents were doing. Of course I was confused as we were moving and staying in a new country. English became my second language and at of an age of eight I understood I needed to learn English in order to adapt into this new profound culture. Yet, English was not easy to come by as it was a completely new language and new subject. However, I had many helps from my family, friends, teacher, books, and even television was a big help.

I was out of place in that class as we were just learning the basic of the language such as the alphabets and numbers, and I already knew most of these, the thing I despised the most was memorizing the order of our president’s names since I was never skilled in memorizing most things. After the first hour I had to walk back to my second grade class, I was also older than most of my classmates as there was a weird policy of if one’s is to be born after august, they must stay behind a grade. This made me felt out of place the most, as my cousin was the same age as me yet he was born in July and was ahead of me by a school year. Another memorable moment was in second grade we had a spelling bee and when it was my turn I had to spelled out “shark”, I knew what a shark was however as I was spelling I forgot about the “k” until one of my classmate whispered it to me, yet the teacher heard. I don’t really why I remembered this trivial memory. I wasn’t even sure how I felt at that time, was I nervous or embarrassed or frustrated? However this did set my course onto learning more of English and being able to understand and comprehend this new …show more content…
I started off with simple and easy to understand books, most were filled with pictures. Not only books but any words in sight, I would pronounce and read any words I see such as on the road, in a restaurant, on television, even at home. My siblings would also join me in reciting words and telling each other what do they mean, even till today I still would do it, mostly in my head of course. Eventually, my learning capability was high and I was able to interpret complex words using roots words and context clues, and I would start on books higher than my grade level.

I became literate at a very young age around one or two years old and people could understand what I wanted. For example, bolitas (meant balls in Spanish) cooked beans and no bolitas was refried beans. I had a way of commutating with my family but sometimes I would forget what the word was and I used to describe the item itself. They would eventually understand what I mean. Unlike one of the cases in Deborah Brandt’s Sponsors of Literacy, I did not have a tutor or anything like that.…
