Over 11,300 different books have been banned since 1982. Many of those books have been banned in schools. The community should have control of what students read in school to shelter their kids from inappropriate language. Although the books may have inappropriate language within the dialogue, many books might have important ideas that students should learn. One example of this is John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. In the text, it states that “Of Mice and Men contains universal themes that can be read in any culture or time.” The quote shows that many important themes and messages can come from reading the book Of Mice and Men. Since this book has been banned all over the world, many people are not able to find these important messages. If the community was able to control what students were allowed to read, this book could get banned and the students would also not be able to understand these themes and messages. If the community had control over what books students read in school, they could suggest books with important themes without the risk of the being banned.
