Reading and writing are two of the most important skills an individual can possess. Without them, receiving an education or even performing everyday tasks, such as reading a menu or writing own name could be challenging. Everyone has a background story when it comes to learning and developing these skills. In my case, school has been an important part of my development; in fact, a majority of situations are similar to what I encountered growing up, because schoolteachers helped shape us students into the readers and writers we become. Writing and reading was brought to me in various approaches, through parents, teachers, siblings, and peers. One of the most significant influences on my ability to read was my parents. As a child, my siblings and I always had the opportunity to either read, or be read to, by our parents because they enjoyed watching us succeed at school. As a result of having a sister who is the same age as me, we had an advantage when it came to reading assignments, such as always having someone to bounce ideas back and forth from for writing assignments. Competitions were always at a high, whether it was who read the most books or who came up with the best plot for a story. Times related to this had such a significant impact on learning how to read and write for the both of us. Not only did my sister have an impact on my reading and writing abilities, but my brother did as well. He is older than I am and someone I look up to; therefore, I knew I could always ask him anything when I was in need of help on a paper or could not figure out what a word meant. Because my siblings were learning to read and write along with me, this caused them to have a significant impact on my

Life is short. That is the simple and unforgiving fact that cannot be avoided. It can often pass by as quickly as it comes when noses are buried in our cell phones instead of observing and appreciating the changing of seasons or the orange-purple sunset that concludes each day. That one idea— to pay attention— is what drives Alice Steinbach 's philosophy on writing along with a collection of other tactics taught to her by her ninth grade creative writing teacher Miss Dennis, which is showcased in her essay "The Miss Dennis School of Writing". Steinbach creates a well-rounded philosophy consisting of many elements throughout the essay.…

My family wasn’t around a lot when I was younger. My mom and dad both worked full time jobs, and the age gap between my sisters and I made it hard for us to enjoy spending time together. I’ve always felt that the big age gap between me and everyone in my family always affected our closeness. They all seemed so grown up, understanding things that I had yet to grasp, and doing things that I wasn't able to do. I longed to be able to be as grown up as the rest of my family.…

Mrs.Woo doesn’t really give Jing-Mei a choice, she wants to be able to brag about her daughter's “natural pride”. Over the course of this semester, this class has reshaped me as both a reader and a writer. It has helped me think more critically about work I read, and to analyze the reading for components of arguments, or to find bias in the piece I am reading. This class has developed my writing style, and has aided me with becoming a stronger writer. I am now able to write persuasively, while recognizing the apposing side’s point of view. Before I started this class I was terrible at writing persuasively, however, now that I have taken this class I have learned plenty of techniques that will help me with further argumentative pieces.…

When I first heard about this assignment I had mixed emotions, I felt nervous, anxious and I kept obsessing over who I might have as my mentor. I felt this way because I kept on thinking who is this person I will have as my mentor who will I have to interview. I was stepping out of my comfort zone by talking to someone I never met or knew. My beliefs on reading and writing in the field before I did the interview was that I knew that reading was involved with the interview and writing also but I did not know how much was throughout the career field. At first I was going to interview Jody and Colleen from Cakes a Bloomin who was going to be my mentor and I did not get any responses from Jody or Colleen about the questions I emailed them.…

Introduction Growing up, I came from a relatively small immediate family that consisted of my mother, father, brother and twin sister. I am the older twin, while my brother is three years older than me. But I also include other relatives in my immediate family, such as my grandparents and my aunts and uncles because I come from a close-knit family that frequently visits one another daily. Furthermore, as a twin, I was required to dress exactly like my twin and shared the same space as her growing up, which I believe made an impact on my development.…
