Whenever we had a class assigned book to read, I could breeze through it and have enough to get the gist and pass the essay-test afterwards. This year, though, forced me to break my habits because — unlike literature classes in previous years — your intent was never to just assign a “did you like” or “what’s your favorite character” essay. The amount of writing projects you assigned had me feeling like I was caught in a riptide all year; most times I felt as though I was drowning, and every now and then, I’d be brought back up to the surface and allowed to breathe. I felt terrible agony with each essay — mini, macro, macho, informal, formal — but I soon realized how strong my reading and writing skills could be and eventually, by slowing down my quick process, I became more insightful in my reading, and writing became an easier task to achieve. Aside from the typical vocabulary lists and other run-of-the-mill literature assignments, I learned more about this subject than I believe I ever had; I learned not by being behind a wind looking at it, but interacting and having to utilize it.
