Reading And Writing Analysis

Reading and writing has always been a challenging subject for me and people assume that because I’m an honors student that I don’t struggle, but that’s just not the case. I used to approach every writing and reading project with a negative attitude because I wouldn’t know how to go about it: getting it started, what order, how much, and how to end it were the main problems I came across. And while I stumbled over structure, clarity, and getting the point across, my grammar and vocabulary I notice was rarely the issue. I knew what I wanted to say and how to say it most times, but translating my thoughts into understandable words, that’s where the real difficulty began. Writing is a form of communication and as we all know that’s something I’m …show more content…
Whenever we had a class assigned book to read, I could breeze through it and have enough to get the gist and pass the essay-test afterwards. This year, though, forced me to break my habits because — unlike literature classes in previous years — your intent was never to just assign a “did you like” or “what’s your favorite character” essay. The amount of writing projects you assigned had me feeling like I was caught in a riptide all year; most times I felt as though I was drowning, and every now and then, I’d be brought back up to the surface and allowed to breathe. I felt terrible agony with each essay — mini, macro, macho, informal, formal — but I soon realized how strong my reading and writing skills could be and eventually, by slowing down my quick process, I became more insightful in my reading, and writing became an easier task to achieve. Aside from the typical vocabulary lists and other run-of-the-mill literature assignments, I learned more about this subject than I believe I ever had; I learned not by being behind a wind looking at it, but interacting and having to utilize it. I think the most mind blowing thing that I have learned this year was something you informally taught me: the three dot scene break. It’s stupid, I know, but I have seen it used in books before, yet I’ve never had to use it. That’s the case for a lot of things that I’ve actually learned this year — I had a basis but as far as using my knowledge, it first happened in your

Life is short. That is the simple and unforgiving fact that cannot be avoided. It can often pass by as quickly as it comes when noses are buried in our cell phones instead of observing and appreciating the changing of seasons or the orange-purple sunset that concludes each day. That one idea— to pay attention— is what drives Alice Steinbach 's philosophy on writing along with a collection of other tactics taught to her by her ninth grade creative writing teacher Miss Dennis, which is showcased in her essay "The Miss Dennis School of Writing". Steinbach creates a well-rounded philosophy consisting of many elements throughout the essay.…

Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…

Upon reading chapter 5 from Holdstein’s “Who says? The Writer’s Research” I found myself faced with a number of ideas I had been unfamiliar with. After thoroughly examining this chapter, I realized that previously, I hadn’t properly evaluated resources, which is a mistake I made as someone who gathers research and analyzes various ideas in my writing. Throughout this chapter, I took notice that I, as a writer, have three main responsibilities: conducting a thorough search for sources using the proper key words, carefully and meticulously, yet efficiently analyzing sources, and determining the rationality of a source. While these ideas may present themselves as challenging, as I had been previously unfamiliar with them, if I acquire the proper…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

“There is absolutely nothing to write about, school is either too easy to have problems or useless to try to solve them,” I thought as I read my writing prompt. The sheet of paper stated that too write about a time that I worked to solve a problem at school. The only events I could manage to think of were when the class had down time and solved a bug in a program, which wasn’t really school related, and having to present a paper, but that topic had been used for a paper in 7th grade. To avoid being called out for not writing, I started writing random sentences until the idea came to me to write about having to think of a topic to write about. The only issue with that is that I still couldn’t write.…

Like I previously stated I learned how to do many things with my writing this semester. The first essay we wrote, a narrative, was probably my favorite essay to write. Although it was my favorite, it was definitely not my best. I wrote my essay and felt like it was complete and worthy to turn in. Little did I know that was not the case.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

Growing up and throughout my formative years I loved reading but abhorred writing. I was disinterested and struggled with the concept that writing had a structure or flow that would make it easier to accomplish. I excelled at grammar, spelling, and speaking but ask me to write a single page double spaced and it would take me hours. I never took a professional or structured writing class as I avoided the subject in high school like the plague until I got to college.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
