In fact, making new friends was difficult, because I do not socialize as much as others. Inside the classroom, studying for me seemed to become easier as the year progressed, as I continued to ease my way into meeting new people, I felt comfortable where I was; a feeling that I never had when I was at my old school. As a result, this new environment helped me with my weaknesses in reading and writing. Throughout the next two years, I perceived that I had become a better well-rounded student; as well as, I started to enjoy reading and writing more than ever, due to my seventh grade English teacher: Mr. Uhler, his teaching style set the foundation of my English career, with the worksheets that my class to help with conventions. One of Brandt’s main ideas “Reading Serves Writing,” brought up an interesting point about the connections between reading and writing. The concept that “reading serves writing,” is a relatable subject and impacts many college students. Whether you are writing an essay or reading endless chapters for a class, reading and writing hold a major role in education. The idea that the two are completely separate entities, is an interesting concept. To me, when I think about writing I think about the yin yang symbol.…

Being able to write has always been one of my biggest challenges in school. In high school, I would always struggle with the length of my essays because I was always taught that five sentences were enough to complete one paragraph. Each of my paragraphs only had one transition, which I would regularly start with, and my sentences had minimal detail. That was until I started English 1A and began to learn very important concepts for a nicely written assignment. For example, I have learned that transitions help your essay flow smoothly when you are adding new ideas or changing to a different subject.…

Whenever we had a class assigned book to read, I could breeze through it and have enough to get the gist and pass the essay-test afterwards. This year, though, forced me to break my habits because — unlike literature classes in previous years — your intent was never to just assign a “did you like” or “what’s your favorite character” essay. The amount of writing projects you assigned had me feeling like I was caught in a riptide all year; most times I felt as though I was drowning, and every now and then, I’d be brought back up to the surface and allowed to breathe. I felt terrible agony with each essay — mini, macro, macho, informal, formal — but I soon realized how strong my reading and writing skills could be and eventually, by slowing down my quick process, I became more insightful in my reading, and writing became an easier task to achieve. Aside from the typical vocabulary lists and other run-of-the-mill literature assignments, I learned more about this subject than I believe I ever had; I learned not by being behind a wind looking at it, but interacting and having to utilize it.…

Throughout this course there has been many obstacles that got in the way of my writing. When I first came into this course I was average at writing papers, although I did find that I had a difficult time incorporating the text or planning my ideas out in such a way that was organized and put together. As I went and did revisions on my first two essays I noticed that I was missing words between punctuation and had run-on sentences. These were simple mistakes, the mistakes that were harder for me to fix were the ones that incorporated the text and the meaning. Understanding these complex essays in The Ways of Reading, was the hard part for me to be able to create a well organized essay on my thoughts.…
