Three weeks into the school year, you notice that one of your eighth-grade students is consistently disengaged during lessons. She rarely answers questions, and when you call on her, she typically shrugs her shoulders and says, "I don't know. " Even when other students are engaged, you often find her listening to music, engaging in off-topic conversation, or putting her head down on her desk. Your assessments show that the student is well-below grade level in reading and mathematics. Answer both of the questions below, keeping each answer to about 150 words in…
Upon entering my 1st grade classroom, students are welcomed into a multicultural, yet simple world. There are a few maps on the wall and a globe in a corner, and some family photos on my desk. A few simple plants, some with colorful flowers, are placed around the classroom. The seating arrangements include circular tables, with four-to-five students at each table, for work in groups.…
I feel I learned some interesting strategies for my students. What I want to do in my class is have more Sustained Silent Something. Joni talked about this today and it was interesting. She has her students do something quietly that encourages reading. Anything they want to read they can.…
Introduction With one Educational Studies course and a positive field placement experience completed, I believed that I was ready for anything that Child Study and Assessment could throw at me. This field placement, however, is much different than I anticipated. My responsibilities for this field placement are two-fold. Most importantly, as aforementioned, I am to supplement my student, Michael’s [pseudonym], learning by bringing activities that interested him.…

Ever since the creation of the two North American countries, the United States of America (USA) and Canada, it has been observed through the waves of immigration and refugee’s that lower income and poverty stricken areas encounter more difficulties than higher income areas. The low income and poverty stricken communities have higher rates of crime, the population is denser, and it is usually more racially and ethnically diverse. These conditions negatively affect the growth and educational outcomes of the children within these communities. “When collecting data about children and youth, Statistics Canada (2008) considers family income, parents’ occupation, and parents’ education to arrive at an overall indicator of SES” (Woolfolk, Winne, &…

When observing student A during his literacy lesson rug time instruction, I take note of what is going on before his off-task behavior begins to erupt. The three times student A gears his attention to something else in the classroom is when the teacher is giving directions, while the class is having a discussion, in other words when the teacher asks a question and the kids respond by raising their hand, and finally when the teacher is lecturing or informing the students on a topic. Within those three scenarios, I noticed that student A’s problem behavior happens the most during class discussion, when the students are interacting with the teacher.…
I observed a young Asian woman, vigorously washing her hands in the girl’s bathroom in the Homewood location. She then slowly put on her Johns Hopkins sweater. It was interesting to see her focus on her sweater rather than herself as she looked in the mirror. I asked her if she was a student…

Cognitive Observation 2 During the first twelve months of life newborns are initiating cause and effect. While, there is no such thing as two infants developing in exactly the same way, there are milestones that young children should reach by certain ages in order to determine growth. As they begin to relate to their immediate surroundings, infants initiate behaviors that establish cognitive development by way of their developing senses (hearing, taste, smell etc.). After she was done reading the book, she would have the students return to their seats so they could partake in a craft that related to the book. The teacher evaluates how effect her teaching approach is by observing the students work. She writes ‘help’ on the paper or activity when the students require a large amount of help to finish. She accommodates students with disabilities, by having them work one-on-one with another adult that is constantly in the room. Each student takes their turn meeting with this other adult.…
