Read Aloud WV: Case Study

I would like to share with you my newest endeavor; I have just become a member of the board for Read Aloud Ohio County, a chapter of Read Aloud WV. I am so excited to be part of such a significant program. It has been many years since a read aloud organization has been in Ohio County.
So why am I so enthusiastic about this? Well, as a reading interventionist, I realize the importance of children being read to. It is one of the key factors that can establish a life-long love of reading. The read aloud programs are committed to motivating children to “want” to read. The love and want to read will serve as a foundation for learning. Children who excel and embrace reading are prepared for life’s challenges.
In order for this organization to work there is one thing we need- VOLUNTEER READERS. We are looking for those wonderful people that appreciate and are willing to give their time to others. Volunteers are trained to provide a “rewarding experience” for the students, as well as themselves. The training session addresses the why, what, and how of a classroom read aloud gathering. The orientation also provides the volunteer readers with an overview of all the organization’s programs. This allows the volunteer reader to become an “ambassador” for Read Aloud. As a

Book distributions give children access to books and other reading materials in order to “raise a generation of readers”. Classroom enrichment programs provide materials for schools to stimulate an interest in reading. These include Author of the Week information, book trunks, and even Life Stories Units for middle and high schools. Public education is incorporated into all of Read Aloud programs. Read Aloud works to raise public awareness on “the importance of reading to children from infancy and the value of rich print

I have been reading ever since I could remember. I was read to when I was little as well. I do not recall learning to read, only that when my mother sat me down to start learning how to read, I already knew how. All throughout elementary school, I participated in the Accelerated Reader (also called AR) program. I loved it because you would read books, and then takes quizzes on those books.…

In this paper, I will evaluate the role of a Reading Specialist, and how they create a curriculum that anticipates a student’s reading level. Then, I will discuss how these standards coincide to my own beliefs. Finally, I will sum up the duties of a Reading Specialist, and how necessary they are in our education system. Reading Specialist/Literacy coach are professionals whose main duty is to provide educational reading services for students who attend public school. Reading Specialists provide reading programs, improve students reading performances, and write programs at school or at the district level.…

It is without reservation that I recommend Rebecca Guss as an exceedingly qualified candidate for any position she seeks as a reading specialist. Having had the opportunity to work with Rebecca, I know first- hand as the principal at Meramec Elementary School with the School District of Clayton, how remarkable Rebecca is in working on behalf of the students in her charge. At Meramec, Rebecca is responsible for creating and delivering small group and 1 to 1 instruction in reading for students in grades three through five, making cross curricular connections to writing as well as supporting other academic areas with a focus on reading as it serves as the foundation for learning in all other academic areas. In the two years that Rebecca has…

Reading is the foundation of everything “Whether you want to be a reading teacher or not you’re going to be one” says Patty Wagenknecht. She was a language arts teacher for 30 years after that she was on the School Board for 12 years. Patty says she was all over the Pettis county school district, at one point she was in charge of going around making sure that all the teachers had everything they needed to teach appropriately. She would go every summer to find some sort of class or seminar to further her education and get up to date information. “You never really have a summer”…

American society relies on charity and humanitarian industries to confront America’s disparity of income and ability to sustain a healthy life, which has happened since the dawn of civilization in Mesopotamia – the advent of parks for the poor. Colorado Springs, from this spirit, has managed to create a program to help at risk youth with reading literacy for children grade ranges 1-6. The “The Children’s Literacy Center” helps bridge the gap of the – according to their site – 27% of children who fail to meet the state’s reading requirements at a cheap cost. It began in 1991 to “develop a solid reading foundation essential to success now and in the future” as according to their site and with that goal, they claim to have a 95% success rate.…

I never intended to be an illegal smuggler. Seriously. But when four-year-old me found out that preschool had "naptimes" (in which apparently nobody napped, making it a waste of time to me), I decided to take matters into my own hands, with drastic measures. The next day, my top-secret contraband came in with me, in the form of a book. At 1:30, while everyone else did whatever preschoolers do during naptime, the book snuck out of its carefully concealed hiding place and I disappeared into its pages.…

Book Buddies Book Buddies is a strategy I can see myself using one day in my professional practice. This strategy is a fun way to get students excited about reading. Struggling first graders, who cannot read well are paired with community volunteers to read together (Caldwell & Leslie, 2013, pg. 51). The student can listen as their buddy read to him/her, listening to the sound each letter makes to form words and the correct pronunciation of difficult vocabulary. While reading the volunteer and student can take turns and/or use choral and echo reading.…

For strategy section IV, I selected the strategy read-aloud plus because I believed I could successfully incorporate this strategy into my lessons in order to fully benefit Sophia. I chose to implement this strategy because it would provide Sophia with the most beneficial learning experience possible. This strategy is important because it incorporates the modeling of fluent expressive reading of English text with techniques for clarifying vocabulary, while periodically checking for understanding and providing activating knowledge to help make connections between text and personally experiences. This strategy involves the teacher reading the text aloud to the student while providing periodic paraphrasing and other extensions. 3.…

One of the main literacy sponsors growing up was my mom. She was a three grade teacher until I was born. As I grew up she made sure I was reading a book and not wasting all my time watching tv. When I was still learning how to read chapter books my mom would sit on the couch with me and read for at least forty minutes every day so that I grew my read and vocabulary skills. On car rides, weather it was long or short, or if I was just sitting at the baseball field watching my brother play she always made me bring a book with me.…

The slogan will be, “Read to me and I’ll read to you.” Youth will earn coins when they silently read to themselves for 15 mins and when they read during the week and bring in a list of books read signed by a parent. Then coins will be saved until the last Reading Rodeo day where they will be able to spend their coins in the Reading Rodeo Store by first purchasing a book and then other items may be purchased. Each week will involve a special forty-five minute event, perhaps a magic show, Paws for a Cause, a visit from a famous story teller or an author of a book. The youth will also earn coins with each item they bring in for the local food…

Literacy Instruction Framework The ability to read and write does not develop naturally. Teaching reading and writing to emergent readers and writers needs careful planning and systematic instruction. In a joint position and statement of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and International Reading Association (IRA), it stated that “learning to read and write is a complex, multifaceted process that requires a wide variety of instructional approaches” (1998, p. 206). Children need regular meaningful and active experiences with print so they can understand from an early reading and writing are valuable life- tools.…

My aunt is the leader and founder of the Sunshine Readers organization in Laguna Beach. The Sunshine Readers program provides PJ Storytime – an evening literacy program – for families at five OC Public Libraries branches. We dress in our pajamas and bring storybooks to life for young children addressing two vital community needs – early childhood literacy and youth development. During PJ Storytimes, children in the audience are completely captivated as we "perform" stories rather than just read them. As the Sunshine Readers bring characters to life, the audience is transported to an enchanted land or taken on an amazing adventure while interacting with the readers/performers.…
