Read-A Wallflower Response

I have never participated in a Read-a-thon before. I've always had the desire to, however, I have never felt up to it. Yet, this year I will be participating in the Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-thon! This Saturday, from 1pm to 1pm Sunday, I will attempt to read as much as I can.
I've been advised that it's best to target shorter, faster paced books in order to get further; Therefore, I have chosen the following book for my first ever Read-a-thon experience:

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky: This book has been sat on my TBR shelf for nearly two years, which should be a crime considering how much I adored the movie. For those who have not heard of this book, it follows a freshman named Charlie, through diary entries. Charlie is "Shy, Introspective, Intelligent beyond his years yet socially awkward" and the story follows him as he attempts to fit in and find friends. If you have not seen the movie, go check it out! It's such an emotional journey (excuse the clichéd description). This book is roughly 230 page, which is a bit long for a petite book, however I'll definitely be able to read a decent chunk of it during the 24 hours.

The Forgotten Ones is a novella which was released between The Power of Six and The Rise of Nine from the main series. I chose this one as, one, it is only 144 pages and two, It follows one of my favorite characters in the series, Adam. Unfortunately, I have been in a slump with the Lorien Legacies novellas lately, as I have found a considerably amount of inconsistencies when compared to the central novels and within the novellas themselves. Little bits of information altar, and clearly show that no one is checking these novellas before publication (However, that is a rant for another day). I'm having to power through this fact and breathe. The author is only

The summer assignment consist of several rules, such as reading an assigned book given by your instructor, and keeping a journal of your reading in a standard size spiral bound notebook. It may sound boring or lame but it is very helpful in several ways, simply because over the summer, students are too busy traveling, sleeping late, and having great time and afterwards forgetting everything about education.…

I really enjoyed Sandra Cisneros reading of her memoir, A House of My own. I enjoyed this performance for numerous reasons. Firstly, because it was a chapter that was very fresh and clear in my mind. Whilst watching Sandra read her written words out loud I felt as if I could see my own book in front of me and read the words along with her. Furthermore, in spite of the fact that I love writing and there are certain genres and authors that I can genuinely enjoy reading, I am a very poor reader.…

The book I decided to read is called, “Safe Haven” by Nicholas Sparks. The reason I chose to read it was because I didn’t know what else to read and some friends recommended it. There is a total of 340 pages in the book and it took me about two months finish reading due to time spent doing other homework, playing volleyball and reading another book. I really enjoyed this book because I like romance novels that include suspense and action. I think this book is aimed at young adults who are going through trials.…

Reading Memoir John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars, stated,” Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood.” Actually, reading books helps me to explore the world. When I was just a little girl, I loved reading fairy tales which brought me to many vicarious thrilling adventures, and when growing up, non-fiction books taught me how to become a good person. Besides that, reading has brought me to many various levels of emotions, such as joy, love, hate, fear, and sorrow. Some stories not only make me feel euphoric with happy endings, but they also make me feel despondent when a character’s deep sorrow touched my heart.…

Interviewing retired educator, Art Huinker, about his lifetime reading experiences was a very enlightening journey that took us back to the late 1930’s when reading to a child was not as much of a priority for parents as it is today, nor were books as accessible in the home setting, like they are now. As a youngster growing up on a farm in rural Festina, Iowa, Huinker states, “We had a newspaper in the house and a farm journal, but outside of that we did not have any books available for leisure reading.” Moreover, the role of reading in his early life was primarily connected to his academic world where he advanced through the ranks, and eventually achieved a four-year degree at Loras College, while passionately pursuing a career in professional baseball. After marrying Ann, his high school sweetheart, and starting a family of their own, Huinker went on to achieve his dream of pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals and in later years, wrote about his success in the book, “Small Man, Big Heart.” At the end of his sports career Huinker transitioned to a professional career in education that ended as a history professor at Loras College in…
