This paper will summarize ideas learned while reading chapter 10 of “Christian Counseling Ethics” written by Randolph Sanders. It will discuss care for clients wrestling with homosexual preference. It is important to notify the client of the possible treatments and consequences of entering into therapy for sexual identity conflict. You can notify the client through informed consent. Informed consent will notify the client about your knowledge of homosexuality, care options, harm, benefits and future consequences. It is important for the client to know your values and beliefs. It is also important for you to know their values and beliefs. You should not enter into a counseling relationship without informed consent.
It is important for a Christian clinician to be multicultural competent in their practice. Christian clinicians should recognize and understand others differences in order to be a well rounded clinician. Christian counselors can be multicultural without sacrificing their belief system. They can interact with multicultural units. During this interaction they can bring their values, ideas and knowledge to light. It is important for the sexual minority client to learn who they are and build their belief system around that. Some client might choose to include their sexual orientation other may not. It is up to the multicultural clinician to help the client decide what is best.
