- The aim of this experiment is to find out on how the independent variable which is the temperature changes that reaction rate of the magnesium and hydrochloric acid (HCI).
Hypothesis:
- As the concentration increases, the rate of reaction increases as well.
Variables:
- The independent variable is the volume of hydrochloric acid
- The dependent variable is variable is the volume of the hydrochloric acid and the duration of reaction.
- The controlled variables are length of the strip of magnesium metal, Temperature of reactants, Volume of hydrochloric acid solution used, Size of the test tube, Amount of acid (mL) and detergent (drops).
Equipment:
- The equipment that were used in this experiments are: Strip of magnesium metal, Acid concentrations, …show more content…
Prepare the stopwatch to time the reaction.
8. Grab a piece of magnesium strip and drop it to the prepared acid and then start the timer.
9. Monitor the reaction progress.
10. Stop the timer when 1 minute is finished.
11. Repeat steps 7-10
12. Write all the results of your experiment.
Risk assessment and ethics:
Possible hazards may be:
*Chemical burns.
- If this may occur during the experiment, immediately wash your hands and let the teacher or the person in charge know.
*Equipment damage.
- If some of the materials that have been damaged for example, broken glass or someone drops the test tube accidentally. Do not touch them and report it to the teacher quickly as possible.
*Accidentally cut yourself or someone
- Wash the wound immediately and do not touch any chemicals, report it to the teacher or the person in charge and perform a first aid if needed. If the wound is severe, call the school nurse.
*Ingestion of chemicals
- This can occur from dirty hands and not washing your hands after the experiment. IF this happen quickly go tell the teacher or the school nurse as soon as possible.
*Slips or fall
- Ensure that all your stuff in your chair. Clear all the materials from pathways.
