Raymond's Run Theme

Improved Essays
If you truly are a winner, you never give up on yourself. And that’s the theme of Raymond’s Run, written by TonI Cade Bambara. Squeaky never gives up on herself because she is a true champion. And that's why she always pulls through despite the situation.

To prove that Squeaky is strong, she encountered one of the meanest bullies in her town with her friends and came out okay. As a matter of fact, Squeaky even made them look like idiots after they started making fun of her. Only people that can do that are the people who don't give up on themselves, because they know they are strong and can do whatever other people say they can’t do. While Squeaky was getting made fun of, she doesn’t get discouraged.

For example, early in the story, she just comes right out and states “There is no track meet that I don’t win the first place medal.” This shows that Squeaky is extremely confident because she is certain that whenever she is in a running competition, she will win. This unique confidence she possesses causes her to be a memorable character. Another example that illustrates that Squeaky is a confident character is moments before she about to race in the fifty-yard dash. Within a painting, the watercolors and discrete stroke of the brush gives each element a diverse connotation. “Parade” by Abraham Rattner, painted in 1969, illustrates the protests of the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War. This artwork exhibits the warm colors on the crowd and the fiery blazes shaded across the skies, emphasizing the widespread conflicts the nation fostered against this horrendous battle. To me, the term “squeaky wheels” references people who see something wrong with their current situation, and are not afraid to speak up about it, people such as Martin Luther King Jr.. For he was not afraid to show that something was wrong. A “non-squeaky wheel” may see nothing wrong with their situation, or has fear to speak up, such as some of the people in areas of prejudice behavior. When people speak up against a powerful force, they are usually seen as the ones in the wrong. Which makes sense considering a squeaky wheel is an incorrect function of a wheel.…

To please Squeaky’s mother, Squeaky has to be someone she is not. This is similar to Mulan, who sings, “Now I see, that if I were truly myself, I would break my family’s heart.” This is similar to Squeaky’s thinking in “Raymond’s Run”: I’ll highprance down 34th Street like a rodeo pony to keep my knees strong even if it does get my mother uptight so that she walks ahead like she’s not with me, don’t know me, is all by herself on a shopping trip, and I am somebody else’s crazy child. (p. 28, lines 71-76) The only difference between Mulan and Squeaky is that Mulan is afraid of her parents reaction if she shows her true self, and Squeaky does not let anything, not even her mother, stop her from running.…

    The Thing Theme

John Carpenters ’s 1982 horror film, The Thing was made as a premise for social commentary on the deterioration of humanity, warning society of the devastating potential of thinking as individuals in isolation rather than a collective. These themes are accentuated through the use of an alien specimen that enters the world of American male scientists based in Antarctica. The alien (or “Thing”) infects living organisms and attempts to take over the human race by ‘imitating’ them, leaving the men in a fight for their own survival as they try to differentiate between “human” and an alien imitation of a human. The term humanity itself is redefined in this film and is stripped to its bare minimum: the mere biological relationship between humans.…

The conflict of “Raymond’s Run” is between Squeaky, who is the fastest runner in her Harlem neighborhood, and Mr. Pearson, the May Day race director. The conflict started when Mr. Pearson said “Wouldn’t it be a nice gesture if you were… to ahhh…” on page 552, and Squeaky took this as offensive, she already knew what he was going to ask and that was to lose the race on purpose. Therefore, Mr. Pearson was being rude and Squeaky did not appreciate it, that is where the conflict comes in play because of the way Squeaky took the suggestion. In the middle of the conversation with Mr. Pearson, Squeaky had enough and thought to herself, “Grown-ups got a lot of nerve sometimes” then she walked away from Mr. Pearson and went to lay in the grass to get…
