“And it occurred to me that Raymond would make a very fine runner”.This shows that she is thinking more about her brother than just running. She continues to say that she can retire and coach Raymond as her champion. He keeps up when she goes on trots, he can breath in counts of seven which always annoys george. He can also keep up with her on trots and do the exercises she does to run. At the fifty yard dash he kept up with her the whole way to the ribbon. She also for the first time thinks she’s a good runner which throughout the story they disliked each other. Squeaky would even actually want gretchen to help coach Raymond to be a runner. And Gretchen and Squeaky smile at each other out of honest and worthy of respect. “And it’s about as real a smile as girls can do for each other, considering we don’t practice real smiling ever day”. This shows that it is out of respect because Squeaky says girls don’t really smile at each other. If that is true then smiling at one another would have to be acknowledging the other. So in the beginning she is focused on running more than anything else whether is be raymond or anyone
