Toni Cade Bambara’s “Raymond’s Run” tells a story about a girl nicknamed squeaky who trains for for a 50 yard dash until another competitor, Gretchen shows up and starts making fun of Squeaky’s brother, Raymond. Once Squeaky takes control of the situation, she continues to practice. Finally, when the race comes, Squeaky lines up on the start line while Raymond is just outside of fence by Squeaky. They begin the race, Squeaky wins and she realizes that Raymond can be a great runner. As a result, Squeaky changes from hard working by practicing and taking care of Raymond, to later becoming caring by thinking of Raymond’s feelings after the mayday race. After the mayday race, and after she won, Squeaky realizes that she has worried about herself and what she might want more than what Raymond might want. “But what has Raymond got to call his own?” (8) Squeaky is mindful in this situation when she thinks of Raymond and how he isn’t good at anything like she is at running and thinks he might make a fine runner. She and other bullies might not only look at him as the person with a disability, but as a champion if he becomes great at the sport. Squeaky takes the effort to think of what might make Raymond happy, since he may not think to do so himself. Squeaky further thinks of how he can accomplish this, by possibly training him to be better at running. After the race, she not only thinks about Raymond, but of Gretchen. She now thinks her and Gretchen are both serious about running, which now they can possibly become friends and both help coach Raymond (8). Squeaky looks over at Gretchen as she congratulates her for winning the race (8). Doing that Gretchen proves that she can possibly be friends with Squeaky because of her kind personality.
