Raymond's Run Essay

I’m sure most of you know the popular song “believer” but have you realized that the narrator describes the struggles of his life. Raymond’s run also describes a similar story to this one. The protagonist's describe that their being forced to become someone they are not but keep fighting back against these tyrannical ways. In summary, “Raymond’s Run” describes the struggles of a poor black girl living in Harlem in the 1960s. She has to take care of her mentally disabled brother but also wants to participate in the May Day race that she wins every year. However, her mother’s feminist thoughts about her hold her back from what she truly wants to do. Both protagonist voice their opinions and are being forced to become something they don’t want to be. they also both pose the same character trait of a cocky confident narrator.

“I am not a strawberry. I run” Pg. 32, Ln. 199-200. This is What Squeaky believes her life is about because that’s what she dedicates herself to. She says that she is ¨not a strawberry¨, which refers to her not following her mother’s feminist expectations. Imagine Dragons song also considers himself to be “caged” until he breaks out saying, “Don't you tell me what you think that I can be” Also following how the narrator in the “Believer” song denies/rejects what he’s been told what to be.
