Raymond's Run 'And Everything Will Be Okay'

In the world we live in today, everyone is unique in their own way or else the world wouldn’t be so bright. In “Everything Will be Okay”, James, is a sensitive and passionate, unlike his brothers, who are tough and hunt. He finds a stray kitten that he wants to call his own but is eventually put down because it is to sick. He later learns to respect for who he is and notices he doesn’t have to be anything like his family. In “Raymond’s Run”, Squeaky, starts out tough and protective because she watches her special needs brother. She ends up breaking the barrier, and changes who she is and starts to bring new ideas into the world. I will talk about how Squeaky shows us this theme and then how James shows us the same theme. In the stories “Raymond’s Run” and “Everything Will be Okay” the author teaches readers that it is important to be your own person. To begin with, in “Raymond's Run” one theme could be that it is important to not be afraid to show who you are. This is shown throughout the short story by Toni Cade Bambara. This is shown through the story more towards the end. In the end of the short story, James, the protagonist, learns to respect himself for who he is. James finds a cat that he wants to keep, but it has to eventually be put down. After seeing his kitten put down from his brother who works for Dr. Milk a vet, he thinks, “I will never work for Dr. Milk. I will not go hunting with my father.” Another example is that he realizes he doesn’t have to be a tough hunter like his brothers and father.
