The extent to which they can control their lives is massively varied from situation to situation. The short story, ”Two Kinds,” by Amy Tan, the book, The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas, and the short story,”The Pedestrian,” by Ray Bradbury, all demonstrate different instances in which the lives of their characters have varying amounts of control over their lives. The sources, “Two Kinds” and “The Pedestrian” are antithesis from one another in that in “Two Kinds” the protagonist that has complete control over her life and in “The Pedestrian” the main character loses all control over his life. The Count of Monte Cristo presents both sides of the spectrum, because the protagonist loses their control but then takes it back.…

“Raymond’s Run”, a compelling short story written by Toni Cade Bambara which focuses in on Squeaky, a young girl who excels at running, started out conceited but grew considerate after she witnessed her mentally challenged brother, Raymond, run. She also had to keep Gretchen, her competitor, away from winning the first place prize. During the story, Squeaky became incensed when Gretchen’s clique said a few offensive remarks to Raymond, which made Squeaky want to hold the first place trophy in her hand even more. But, Squeaky never realized that she did not always treat Raymond like he was her equal. In the play “The Crucible” written by Arthur Miller we see many themes and lessons in the story. The main theme is focussed on deceit and lying and how lies can lead down a dark road which results in the ruin of many. The Crucible is a fictional play based on the Salem Witch Trials which occurred between February 1692 and May 1693 and resulted in over 150 people being accused of witchcraft and 20 executed. Many people face many challenges each day. Every person goes through some what of a challenge at least a couple times I their life, if they don't give up and try hard enough they can defeat those challenges. In the most recent unit my class did was a facing challenge unit.
