Ray Stannard Baker, born in 1870 in Lansing, Michigan, rose in prominence for being a muckraker journalist during the Progressive Era. The term muckraker was coined by Theodore Roosevelt to describe the investigative journalists who exposed political, social, and economic corruption. Baker got his start as a journalist with Chicago News-Record and McClure's Magazine. His articles on issues including the Pullman Strike, Coxey’s Army, and railroad corruption made his name well-known. Before long, Baker was recognized as one of the leading journalists in the “New Journalism” that was revolutionizing the press.
