Ray Evans Icebreakers Speech

It is a tradition of Toastmasters for a new member to deliver a speech very soon to loosen up and introduce themselves. That speech is referred to as the ‘Icebreakers speech.’ I wrote and delivered the speech below.

My name is ‘Ray’ Evans. More precisely … Adrian Ray Evans. As in … Arts by Adrian R. Evans … Contemporary paintings in oil. Friends and family call me ‘Ray.’
I’m a retired house painter. I had my own house painting contracting business in Orlando Fla. I retired from there and moved to Owensboro about a year ago. Now before you go clearing off the sanity session couch, let me explain why I retired ‘from’ Florida:

Now, in retirement, I hope to capitalize on that hobby by selling some art. At this time, I’m proud to say, there are many paintings by Adrian R. hanging in several cities across the U.S.
I, as ‘Adrian R.’ have sold more paintings in my lifetime than Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh together sold in their lifetime. Hopefully my paintings show my sense of humor, (which my wife says keeps her going during any difficult times), my concerns for the environment and my love for the beauty all around us.
I am also a published author with just one book, so far, but watch out in the months and years to come. I’ll be writing many more!
(I later published a second book,

I have dabbled with art ever since I was a toddler. I would draw anywhere I went: school, home, and even at church. It started out as a hobby, but soon, I immersed myself into the world of art by integrating art with medicine. I have always found medical dramas to be particularly intriguing. Developing into this interest, I started writing my own medical journal, where I took notes from a book called Gray’s Anatomy and from the medical dramas I watched.…

Artistically speaking, I have never been very affluent. There was never much involvement of art in my early life, my parents were busy blue-collar workers and often saw art as a shiny unnecessity. As I grew though, I often found myself drawn to the artistic talents of others, slightly green with jealousy because of my own lack of abilities. Naturally I made peace with this, and now I am drawn to all sorts of exhibitions and artistic expressions.…

Okay, I will totally admit that I am extremely biased towards my home town of Baltimore, Maryland, as a place for folks to visit. Each and every time I go back to the place that I'll always consider home is an extremely emotional and truly joyous event for me. Much of my family has, sadly, passed away, but my mother still lives in the concrete Cape Cod style bungalow in which I was raised for the first nineteen years of my life. It's located on a quiet residential street right on the fringe of Baltimore City and Baltimore County in an area popularly known as "Gardenville". The homes are small, especially by today's standards, but the memories of that area have lasted a lifetime for me. But enough with the reminiscing! Over the years…
