Ray Bradbury's Use Of'similes In The Veldt '

Decent Essays
Several readers recall Ray Bradbury for his many uses of similes. In the story, The Veldt, its clear to see that he used the technique when he compares the children's cheeks and eyes to common objects. The readers informed that the children are coming through the front and their eyes look like blue quartz marbles and their cheeks look like minty candy. It’s clear to see this when he says, “Wendy and Peter were coming in the front door, cheeks like peppermint candy, eyes like bright blue agate marbles…” (Page 21) In other words, the two kids appear to have rosy cheeks and bold blue eyes. By using similes, it becomes easier for the reader to clearly imagine what is happening in the story.

We are disappointed by Lorin Bradbury’s explanation of why women stay in domestic violence relationships. A more important question is “Why do batterers hit and attempt to control a person whom their cultural norms tell them to love and cherish?” This would have been an opportunity for the religious leader, Pastor Bradbury, to apologize for the countless Christian pastors over the decades who have counseled women to stay with abusive partners. It would have been the opportunity for the psychologist, Dr. Bradbury, to acknowledge the complex situation a person faces when they love and need someone who becomes dysfunctional and abusive when they drink. It would have been an opportunity for the human being, Lorin Bradbury, to show more insight…

Having Cried Wolf does a lot of work in only a short amount of space. Gretchen Shirm does so by taking on multiple characters’ stories, including different perspectives and interwoven storylines, all the while being chock full of vivid imagery and carefully crafted with literary techniques such as similes and metaphors. She also gives such specific, detailed, and relatable examples, appealing to multiple senses that make the reader feel almost as if they are actually there. For me, all of these techniques make the book more relatable, which in turn makes it come to life in a way. Similes are sprinkled throughout the book; some more poetic while others are simple and mundane comparisons, some that set the scene while others do a nice job of…

There are only a few similes but the few that I found began in Chapter Three when there was an evident comparison of a glare towards ghosts 'a glare of white letters started from the dark, as vivid as spectres.' (Wuthering Heights, Chapter 3). Another simile I found was found on page 38, Chapter five when everyone tried to stay as quiet as possible as they were in fear of waking Mr. Earnshaw. The people were compared to mice 'We all kept as mute as mice a full half-hour' (Wuthering Heights, Chapter 5, P.38). The last two similes I found were on page 40 where we are able to witness the pure beauty of Miss Cathy when her eyes are describes as diamonds. '…
