Improved Essays
Ray Bradbury’s theme in “The Pedestrian”is that too much technology can lead to an unpleasant and sad life. Bradbury uses atmosphere to develop the theme in his short story “The Pedestrian” because it adds a sense of contrast to the writing to persuade the reader of his views. Bradbury explains this dystopian world by comparing the winter and the dessert, as well as, death and light. By using these specific atmospheres, he can clearly depict his theme to his audience. Bradbury includes phrases in his writing that reflect his atmosphere: “misty evening in November”, “frosty air”, “early November evening”, “crystal frost in the air”, “branches filled with invisible snow”, “frozen”, “...whistled a cold quiet whistle between his teeth”,“a wintry,

The Veldt Response George, the main character in “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury, develops immensely from the beginning of the story to the end. In the beginning, George is inattentive to his family. George and his wife Lydia have a conversation in which Lydia starts to explain to an oblivious George that “the nursery is different now than it was” (Bradbury 1). His wife knows what is going on with the nursery but George does not. Inattentive people usually have no clue what is going on with their family and in the household.…

The “Veldt” by Ray Bradbury tells the story of a family which has been blinded by technology told via a Third Person Limited Omniscient point of view. As a result of the integration of excessive amounts of technology, their traditional family bonds have deteriorated. They have allowed technology to take over and replace each other, resulting in the constant chipping away at their familial bonds. It shows us the extent to which their bonds have deteriorated and how towards the end, they attempt to regain a sense of normalcy, but it is too late. A crucial theme that develops towards the end is that allowing technology to take over and blind us can lead to the deterioration of traditional family bonds which Bradbury effectively illustrates via his use of symbolism, personification and irony.…

In “The Pedestrian,” Bradbury depicts a future society so obsessed with television, that those who are not are regarded as strange and even abnormal. The story is set 2053 and the majority of people stay in their homes and watch television, but one man, Leonard Mead, enjoys to take walks outside. In fact, he seems to be the only person who walks the streets, as in the ten years that he has taken walks, he has never seen another pedestrian. This shows how everyone has changed from being social to being isolated and glued to their television screens at home. On one walk, Mead is stopped by a police car which regards him as suspicious.…

Symbolism Within “The Veldt” Within literature, symbolism is used by assigning symbolic meanings to objects, settings, or actions to represent an idea or characteristic. In the short story “The Veldt,” Ray Bradbury uses various symbols within the text that allow the readers to identify what the author is trying to tell them. The symbols allow the readers to define the character of Wendy and Peter and the relationship they have with their parents and the house, a broader understanding of the setting and to understand the story’s theme. Wendy and Peter are the children of George and Lydia. The relationship they have isn’t as affectionate as it should be, since George installed machinery that would take care of them all, the children grew up learning that they would have everything handed to them and wouldn’t…

The short story “The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury uses symbolism to convey the idea that the character Leonard Mead is the last “living” person in his reality. The narrator of this story describes Leonard's decision of which way to walk as “ it really made no difference; he was alone in this world of A.D. 2053, or as good as alone.” this tells the reader that while Leonard might share the world with other humans he experiences no meaningful interactions with them causing him to be “as good as alone.” Ray Bradbury also uses symbolisms of death when ever he describes any other person in the story, this is made explicitly clear in the line “Everything went on in tomblike house … where people sat like the dead, the grey or multicolored lights touching…

Expository Essay: The Pedestrian “The Pedestrian” is a dystopian story with a very unexpected plot twist, but it was hard for us to believe that technology could destroy society, just like how it was revealed in the story. We believe that this was not the indented reaction Bradbury had hoped for because, the story still leaves us with suspicion that technology can harm our society. However, The Pedestrian is not a typical story as it does not follow the normal story structure; finishing with a climax showcasing how people lose their identity and are being judged due to their reliance on technology, virtual entertainment, and their social aspect of daily life. this short story also finishes with a climax.…

In Ray Bradbury’s, “The Pedestrian”, there was a lot more figurative language. The story regarded the neighborhoods as being scary graveyards with ominous lights flickering upon the graves with the dead sitting inside, because of the TV lights flickering from the windows of the houses and the people mindlessly switching channels like drones. When Ray Bradbury was describing the police car, he said, “The car hesitated, or rather gave a faint whirring click, as if information, somewhere, was dropping card by punch-slotted card under electric eyes.” He was describing the police car with human characteristics mixed in with electronically based characteristics. This puts emphasis on how much…

“The Pedestrian” is an interesting one for me as it is very unconventional, especially when comparing it to the likes of the previous short stories we read, like “The Tell-Tale Heart” or “Marigolds”. In these stories, the plot was outlined, in a way, so that we could identify how the story might end, and why it ended that way. The story uses heavy amounts of imagery to help convey the loneliness and an empty quietness of the town in which the narrator resides. A heavy line which the author uses is “…there were whisperings and murmurs where a window in a tomb-like building was still open.”…
