Bradbury’s style is richly visual and metaphoric. During one of the first scenes, Guy Montag is walking back from work and Bradbury’s sentence creates a very real portray of the fictional event. “The autumn leaves blew over the moonlit pavement in such a way as to make the girl who was moving there seemed fixed to a sliding walk” (Pg. 3). Bradbury’s use of the phrase “autumn leaves” in his sentences lets the readers know what time of the year it is. This simple phrase can give the readers insight into what the area around Montag looks like, in terms of tree color, and can also help establish the temperate that the story takes place in. They are needed in order to fulfill people’s desire of free speech and thought. There are a number of reasons that I would recommend Fahrenheit 451 for an English class. For example, as discussed above, Bradbury’s use of descriptive sentences and metaphors are good examples of how to keep a reader engaged in the book. The themes that Bradbury brings up, like freedom of speech, are an important topic to talk about with students.
