Bradbury grew up in Waukegan Illinois with a supportive family and a keen interest in magic and fantasy. To make money he sold newspapers on the streets. He started his own magazine Futuria Fantasia, in which he used different pseudonyms to hide that he was almost always the only writer.
Bradbury became well know after writing Fahrenheit 451 in in 1953. The main theme was speculated to be censorship and conformity, which Bradbury challenged by declaring that it comments on television taking away interest in books. Despite his dislike in television, Bradbury produced the HBO series Ray Bradbury Theater which portrayed his numerous short stories and ran from 1986 to 1992. It could be argued that Bradbury brought science fiction to a wider audience with his Theater. Bradbury continued to write well into his 80’s with help of his daughters.
On his 80th birthday, Bradbury said “The feeling I have every day is very much the same as it was when I was twelve. In any event, here I am, eighty years old, feeling no different, full of a great sense of joy, and glad for the long life that has been allowed me.
