If left untreated, it may also lead to permanent loss of vision and eventual blindness. Glaucoma can affect any age group. However, it is more prevalent amongst the geriatric population. The primary cause of optic nerve damage is the increased pressure in the eyeball. This rise in pressure is due to accumulation of aqueous humor, which is generally expected to get drained into the anterior chamber of the eye. Overproduction of the fluid or failure in the draining system results in increased pressure in the eyeball which subsequently damages the optic nerve and thus glaucoma.
Speaking of global statistics, a recent study shows that glaucoma rate is Canada is 1.9% more prevalent than USA. More than 400,000 Canadians suffer from glaucoma . In Mexico, the glaucoma rate has increased by 13.3% since 1990 and is the most common ophthalmic disorder amongst its population. The numbers with Japan is quite disturbing. Japan projects an increased glaucoma rate of 72.6% since 1990 with an average of 3.2% per year. More than half of the Japanese population suffer from glaucoma . Hence, based on these statistics, Canada, Mexico and Japan would be the target countries for Raven Medicals’

• Device Description
The ViStent, is a single piece, L-shaped structure made up of titanium. It is provided in form of two models, VSL for the left eye and VSR for the right eye. It is dispensed pre-stacked with a single use tool (inserter) for introducing into the eye during a cataract surgery. Once inside the eye, the inserter is passed over the foremost chamber and embedded through the nasal trabecular meshwork into the Schlemm's canal. On appropriate implantation, the stent is bypassed through the trabecular meshwork to Schlemm's canal to enhance watery surge through the common physiologic pathway.
The stent is 1.0 mm x 0.30 mm with a snorkel length of 0.20 mm, and a snorkel bore measurement of 100pm. The stent has a "L"- formed structure with a snorkel (channel) on the short side that lies in the anterior chamber, the half-pipe side of it opens in Schlemm's canal. The closed-pipe body resides against the internal wall of Schlemm's canal. The open half-pipe body portion resides against the outer wall of Schlemm’s canal and serves as collector channels. The device is coated with heparin to provide lubrication to the device during the initial

Fontan procedure is set of several surgeries that is used to Tricuspid atresia, a congenital cardiac disorder in which the patient exhibit a small pulmonary valve, a small ventricular septal defect (VSD), and atrioventricular septal defect (ASD). Although each individual case of tricuspid atresia may differ significantly, these patients often have a single functioning ventricle. A Fontan Procedure is performed in order to prevent oxygen rich blood from mixing with and oxygen poor blood within the heart. Firstly, a bi-directional Glen shunt is performed in order to detach the superior vena cava This removes the superior vena cava from the right atrium and attaches it to the pulmonary artery. Then the pulmonary artery and right atrium are connected…

Angle-closure glaucoma is defined as an obstruction of the flow of aqueous humor in the eye due to the iris and trabecular meshwork being too close together which creates a closed angle where 270 degrees or more of the angle is occluded.1 Occlusion of the angle causes the intraocular pressure (IOP) to elevate. Optic nerve damage can occur if IOP is greater than 40 mmHg and permanent vision loss can occur if an individual's IOP is greater than 60 mmHg.2 The incidence of angle-closure glaucoma is variable but it is seen more frequently in individuals of Inuit, Chinese, and Asian-Indian descent. In the United States, only a small number of individuals with glaucoma suffer from angle-closure glaucoma. Most individuals with angle-closure glaucoma…

However, the prevalence of PLSVC in persons undergoing pacemaker and/or ICD placement is approximately 4% (2). Pathophysiology: PLSVC occurs when the embryologic structure, the left anterior cardinal vein, fails to involute to become the ligament of Marshall. The PLSVC most commonly connects to the coronary sinus, eventually returning blood to the right atrium.…

The common raven (Corvus corax), also known as the northern raven, is a large all-black passerine bird. Found across the Northern Hemisphere, it is the most widely distributed of all corvids. There are at least eight subspecies with little variation in appearance, although recent research has demonstrated significant genetic differences among populations from various regions. It is one of the two largest corvids, alongside the thick-billed raven, and is possibly the heaviest passerine bird; at maturity, the common raven averages 63 centimetres (25 inches) in length and 1.2 kilograms (2.6 pounds) in mass. Common ravens can live up to 21 years in the wild,[2] a lifespan exceeded among passerines by only a few Australasian species such as the…

Coronary artery disease continues to maintain its status as the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. It is a high priority of clinicians not only to manage the acute symptoms of coronary artery disease, but also to prevent future major adverse cardiac events, such as acute myocardial infarction and cardiac death. Percutaneous coronary intervention is a nonsurgical procedure to treat atherosclerosis within the heart’s vessels (cite). Percutaneous coronary intervention, a balloon angioplasty procedure, involves inserting a metal wire stent within a constricted coronary artery. Using a balloon catheter with guided x-ray imaging, the stent is implanted as the balloon simultaneously inflates.…

An advantage for using FFR is it’s ability to determine if the severity of a coronary stenosis is great enough to warrant revascularization. FFR measurements provide valuable information used in determining the best course of treatment, to revascularize by PCI or by CABG. These measurements have shown to improve patients outcome and decrease their need for future hospitalizations that require needed revascularization.…

At some point, injury reaches a point of ‘no return’ where DR will become inevitable. Most of the current therapies are aimed at managing the symptoms of diabetes, or glucose levels. For type I diabetes, the standard treatment is insulin, while for type II diabetes it can be one or a combination of sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, biguanides, alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, meglitinides, and insulin (9). However, these drugs do not for the most part treat the underlying microvascular mechanisms contributing to DR. Studies have indicated that despite tight glycemic control, retinal microvascular complications will continue to develop and the factors leading to these complications will persist in DR (10-12).…
