What is a Rave?
When you hear the word “rave”, what comes to your mind? This answer may vary depending on the person, but for many, the concept that everyone envisions, is the topic of drugs. A various amount of people who are not involved in the “rave community” form a common misconception that a rave revolves strictly around the aspect of consuming drugs. And until recently, I must admit that I shared this common misapprehension. I did not believe that there was a logical purpose to attend a rave, and therefore, I shut myself off from the astonishing experience itself. Because of a significant amount of reported drug abuse at these events, raves began to attract negative attention from the media. In result, Acid House was banned from all radio, television and other media sources. Following this, new laws were passed in hopes to put an end to the movement all together, and law enforcement shut down the “Acid House parties”. However, these complications did not stop young people from doing what they loved. As I have said, not everyone who raves, doe it for the drugs. So the true and compassionate ravers, continued on in safety. One man said, “Acid House was an example of the media not allowing youth culture to ferment and allow itself to go off in the different directions it needs to to become something great.” Underground parties were held in empty warehouses among London and in the United States. Furthermore, during the backlash, a credible UK Acid House record managed to break into the mainstream and the genre began streaming at clubs. Separate from the music, one of the most significant creators of the “rave scene” in the United States was DJ Scotto, who put on Manhattans first rave. This sparked yet another movement in yet another city, which led to the development of smaller events in the United States.
