My guess is that you’ve experienced peer pressure at least once in your life. Pushed into doing something you may not have wanted to do. Why? For fear of your friends or someone you like thinking you’re weird because you didn’t do this or that you’re a coward because you didn’t try that. This is called conformity-where you try to act cool and behave and think in a way that is widely socially acceptable.…

The Availability heuristic is when an individual makes a decision based on what comes to mind first. In Clarks case if he were to use this thought process he'd consider applying for colleges that are very well known or that he's previously heard of such as; Harvard, Yale, Brown, Columbia or Princeton. Clark wouldn't look into other colleges that could be closer to wherever he lives or even bother to do more research on other colleges. Clark could miss out on what could benefit him most. Compliance is to acquiesce with the opinions of your peers and doing what they think is the right thing.…

Question #2 Hirschi’s social bond theory is a member of the social control paradigm and begins with the assumption that human beings are inherently drawn to deviant behaviour (King, 2016c, para 2). “Deviance is not socially created; it is inevitable unless mechanisms are socially created to prevent it” (King, 2016c, para 2). There are four types of social bonds that draw individuals away from criminality or deviance: Attachment, commitment, involvement and belief. Attachment refers to having significant others in ones life, along with a combination of supervision and caring. Strong and developed emotional ties with others such as families, peers and teachers can assist in the resistance from deviance and delinquency (King, 2016c, para 4).…

Society and the individuals that comprise it feed off each other in a sometimes symbiotic, sometimes parasitic relationship- such is the narrator of Fountain and Tomb’s world. In his anthology, author Naguib Mahfouz walks us through a series of autobiographical excerpts from his time growing up in a small alleyway in Cairo during the early 20th century. The stories deal with marriage, political revolution, human nature, and the interplay between individuals and the society they build. Through his short stories, Mahfouz illustrates that individuals owe society conformity and participation, even above their own safety and happiness, while societies owe individuals security and structure. Individuals must place conformity to society before their wellbeing, asthere are consequences of what happens when they fail to accommodate to its expectations, such as inducing…

Everyone has experienced classical conditioning and may not even know it. A common example is food: you ate something that made you sick and now you never eat it; you’re conditioned against the food because you had a bad reaction. In the most simple terms, classical conditioning or Pavlovian conditioning is learning a new behavior with different stimuli that create a reaction that can be repeated numerously through a recurring experiment. This kind of conditioning is seen in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, and goes along with the theme, psychological conditioning is potentially dangerous, which I agree with.…

The friendship network of my dorm hall is contingent on who roomed with who, as well as what classes and extracurricular activities each individual chose to participate in. Attitudinal behaviors regarding any given individual’s study habits and alcohol consumption varied and affected relationships, but as a whole, students on my hall are friends with one another, although the types of these friendships vary case by case. Correlatively speaking, there is also an overall trend that those who study alone or in the dorm are those who do not condone alcohol consumption and going out. A prime example of this is Jordan and Xara, whom are roommates and friends, but due to their conflicting homework habits and interests, are often at odds with one…

Social pressure is defined as the direct influence on people by peers, or the effect on an individual who gets encouraged to follow their peers by changing their attitudes, values, or opinions to conform to those influencing the group or individual. Most people have experienced and succumbed to social pressure because of many influencing factors, but others have the individuality to resist such factors. The concept of succumbing to social pressure is cultivated by friends, or colleagues, or the presence of an authority figure, whereas the concept of resisting social pressure is influenced by questioning…

Introduction. The film Freedom Writers does a good example of how to motivate and convince others about a social conduct and nice ways of expressing , feeling in community with others and recognizing that an action is wrong. This was done by a teacher, Mrs Gruwell, that started in the school with little knowledge about that. People don't liked how her "wasted" her time in something so supportive to a population of students that really needed it, and in the end, it was an excellent job.…

Never underestimate the influence of the human spirit. Human beings are able to impact and inspire each other. The same concept may be applied towards the perception of peer pressure which has triggered varied responses amongst people. There has been a misconception in the way the term “pressure” is perceived, often associated with negativity and unpleasant matters. However, there is also the delightful aspect of peer pressure in which teenagers, especially a student, can conform and behave ‘like’ other members of a peer group, which is not necessarily a bad thing.…
