Rattle Watch History

In 1652 New York created the first Rattle Watch, this was before they thought of whistles. The rattles made a distinct noise calling for help. These wooden rattles were used well into the 19th century. The 1700’s saw more and more people moving into the cities and seaports which meant more work for the Watch. With Goods being shipped in and out at ever increasing pace the attraction for thieves and graft became greater and the crowd it brought made the job tougher. Taverns and brothels filled with men and women who spoke different languages, drinking and bored. All experienced in living on the edge of survival and living it up with their friends. The watch was not prepared for this, most quit and why not. Who would do a job like this for free. …show more content…

November 9, 2000 President William Jefferson Clinton breaks ground on the National Law Enforcement Museum.
