As avoidance is one of the major factors contributing to Sophie’s current struggle to cope with life, therapy should focus on addressing her alcohol use, procrastination and EA as well as cognitive fusions, including her SI. As she has had two years of CBT with seemingly no progression, there may be evidence to suggest that attempts to change the content of Sophie’s maladaptive thoughts and beliefs have not been successful in helping her make behavioural changes (Hann & Mccracken, 2014). Therefore it could be argued that ACT might be a more effective therapy as it promotes behaviour change regardless of content of thought (Ruiz, 2012).
