On March 20, 2015 my dad took my dog, Copper, a 15-year-old Basset Hound, to my veterinarian to be euthanized. Copper’s organs were shutting down and he couldn’t keep food or water down on his own. He had been at the vet for almost a week on fluids he was receiving through an IV. Copper hadn’t eaten for a couple of days as a result of him being on the IV, his breathing was loud and rapid as this was a sign that his organs were shutting down. The vet gave us a timeline that Copper wouldn’t live past winter. Our hopes were high when given this timeline. The vet never told us that we had to euthanize him instead they chose not to speak on this issue to us. In the scenario that I listed above, about my ill pet, I feel that it was morally correct to terminate his life due to his circumstances. I’ve often thought of the quality of life that Cooper would have had if it weren’t for his illness. As I expand on what my understanding and thoughts on Rand’s theory of Rational Ethical Egoism, I’ve learned what my family and I decided to do was for Cooper was necessary. I would agree with her Theory considering the situation we were in when we decided to euthanize Copper. I agree with Rand that in our daily life in any situation that comes our way we should always be using our self-reason to determine what’s best for …show more content…
There are no objective, universal moral truths --- only individual’s opinions or preferences”(5). For better words I agree completely with Jean- Jacques Rousseau who took a stand on what Ethical Subjectivism was to her I quote her saying “ What I feel is right is right. What I feel is wrong is wrong” (5). This to me only supports my decision as being moral and proper when I had to make the decision. A weakness in this theory could be that a family might consider holding off from putting their pet to sleep because of the amount of emotional detachment it will cause

Our Foster dog almost died, was diagnosed with either/both leukemia and a stomach blockage of some sort, and then made a full recovery. We had a chance to have him put down, but I decided to give him more time and brought him home from the hospital with a prescription for Prednisone, which was expected to extend his life by maybe another 6 weeks. He’s in his third week now and, other than the shaved legs and belly, seems perfectly normal.…

In end-of-life healthcare decisions, a decision frequently must be made between advanced medical intervention and allowing the patient to die peacefully. Although everyone involved in a patient’s treatment wants what is best for a patient, the situation can become a challenging ethical dilemma because what is best for a patient is often unclear. If extraordinary medical intervention is attempted and allows the patient to continue living a happy life, that is clearly an awesome outcome.…
