Diffusion in Agar Cubes Experiment
Introduction
Diffusion is a paramount process to organisms because molecules enter the body cells and waste products are removed. Diffusion is the movement of particles from regions with dense areas to regions with lower density. Diffusions rate can be determined by many factors this includes, the size, synthetic composition, concentration gradient, surface area to volume ratio. The independent variable in this experiment is the size of the agar, this means that the dependent variable is the rate at which the agar cubes diffuse.

Cellular structure is the one of the key building blocks of the universe. Cells can transport different substances such as water, oxygen and nutrients, without cells nothing living could exist such as us humans as we need our vital organs and the many systems that keep us alive. Dissolved substances must enter through the cell membrane and entre into or out of a cell. Diffusion is what allows this process. Particles diffuse from a high concentrated area to an

This experiment could be improved through the test being repeated multiple times rather than having just nine experimental groups. The experiment could have also beeen improved by having molds that perfectly cut the size of the agar cubes perfectly, this would make the experiment more accurate across experiment groups, along with the agar cubes sitting in the mixture for ten minutes exactly, instead of the time being more or less, this is what happened in the experiment. Having three beakers instead of one would have created more accurate results by isolating the agar cubes, creating less room for

A possible error that could have been made was not doing at least three experiments. If more experiments were done, the information would have been more accurate. Another possible error was only using two liquids. If more than two liquids were used in this experiment, then the information would have also been more accurate. A major error in this experiment was using a different starting temperature for each trial.…

When beginning the experiment we observed and recorded the appearance of the materials in use like instructed. We weighed our materials out on a tared scale and placed them all in their corresponding test tube. We mixed and centrifuged our solution all three times for the appropriate times and decanted them accordingly. After getting all our liquid we heated up until a white solid formed, waited for it cool…

This lab provided a good perspective of the movement of molecules diffusing and going through osmosis into a cell. The ability of the cell membrane to be selective was illustrated by it not allowing all the molecules through (starch). This shows how in a real cell it can differ between essential and nonessential or invading molecules. Lastly, It gave a good example of hypertonic solutions and how the concentration gradient…

Another thing that went well was that all of the groups got their data on time and followed the directions correctly. One thing we could improve is to reduce scale errors we can check the scales before use, and measure our data multiple times each. Another thing we can do to improve the lab is to measure out the liquid more accurately; the sources of error in our data was most likely caused by differences in the amount of BTB and Ethanol so measuring out these amounts can greatly reduce error. One source of error in the lab was the scales used. The scales are not always accurate, it could be the scales not calibrated or it could be low on battery which can cause large errors in data.…

Characteristics of living cell Cells are considered as the most fundamental unit that has the responsibility to carry functions within a living organism (De Robertis & De Robertis, 2006). The characteristics of living cells are: Cell Membrane: A protective layer that is surrounded to protect from its organelles and is made of bi-layer of a molecule known as phospholipids. A cell membrane also facilitates the transportation of molecules…

When 4 drops of food colouring were added to the water, it spread throughout the water in a moderate speed. During approximately the first 2 minutes, the food colouring moved in a wavy motion travelling downwards to the bottom of the beaker. Soon after, some of the food colouring that had reached the bottom of the beaker had begun to rise back up to the top. The speed of diffusion gradually decelerated as it came to the end of five minutes. The food colouring had been diffused entirely throughout the water.…

Cells are very important because they are assumed to be the basics of life. There are two types of cells that exist: Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes. The interesting thing is that, even though the prokaryotes seem to be very different from the eukaryotes. For example, humans look very different from the bacteria, but they still do share some characteristics. No matter at which cell you are looking at: bacteria’s`, plants`, animals`, protists`, etc., they all will be bounded by a plasma membrane (Biology Department,2015), and contain a nucleic acid: such as DNA, RNA, cytoplasm, and ribosomes.…

The cell membrane separates the inside of a cell from anything around it. The cell membrane is comprised of lots of smaller molecules called phospholipids. Phospholipids have dual nature they have a head and a tail, the head is made up of phosphate and is hydrophilic (likes water) and the tail is a lipid and is hydrophobic doesn’t like water. The phospholipids make up a bi-layer this is essential so that the hydrophobic tails do not come into contact with neither the extracellular fluid nor the inner cellular fluid. The phospholipids will allow small uncharged molecules through such as carbon dioxide and oxygen and passage such as Osmosis.…
