Rat Kiley By Tim O Brien Analysis

The things they carried was a group of war stories from tim o'brien's experiences, in the beginning of the story they say specific things of what they all carried but as the story goes on you have to acknowledge what they are carrying not only the physical items but things that they carried mentally.

In war many soldiers have things that will get past their mind defence and mess with them turning them crazy or ill. Rat kiley was a medic and was able to help the soldiers when they were injured, everyone has their breaking point and rat kiley reached his at night life because he just could not take it anymore always being in the dark. During the war war they were in they used a lot of immature humor to make the feelings feel less gloom and full of death. All of the characters carried something before and after the war, Tim talks about how the environment around him felt dim and gloomy when he was shot and just focusing on a single piece of grass he thought what a sad way to die with the last thing he was going to see was grass and that he could feel the warmth of his own blood and smelling the rottenness of his own dying body. The war around them he describes felt fake as if they were watching a movie on themselves in 3rd person.

Tim o'Brien felt guilt about everything he had seen happen around him even if it was not completely his fault. “I want to tell you this: twenty years ago I watched a man die on a trail near the village of My Khe.
