Through taking the Quality and Culture Quiz, I learned that I am not as culturally sensitive or aware of the customs and beliefs of other cultures as I previously believed I was. In “Counting Rats From Space” by Achieve 3000, its purpose is to save the Kangaroo Rats from extinction and in “Space Bugs” also by Achieve 3000, its purpose is to find out how they can prevent germs that cause disease. Yet, “Space Bugs” was more effective in achieving its purpose. In “Space Bugs” Achieve states, “‘There are areas in the body which are low shear, such as the gastrointestinal tract, where salmonella finds itself,’ Nickerson said.” Ultimately, sending salmonella to space was helpful in scientist understanding the way the germ operates. Throughout his article “How a TV Sitcom Triggered the Downfall of Western Civilization”, David Hopkins describes the nature of the Millennial generation by pointing out the obvious flaws of the age group that has altered the course of society. He explains that the attitudes and lifestyles of U.S. citizens were modified because of the contents of the very popular TV Sitcom, Friends. My thoughts, however, differ from Hopkins; I believe that it is an extreme exaggeration to blame the downfall of Western Civilization on a Television show. The Scopes trial, often called the Monkey Trial, was, and still is one of the most controversial trials in our country's history. The trial addressed evolution which, under The Butler Act, was illegal to teach. A Tennessee teacher taught a high school class evolution from a chapter in a previously state-approved textbook, after being approached by an organization. They encounter characters that also face a deprivation of human contact due to their own disabilities in society; Candy and his age, Crooks and his race, and Curley’s wife and her gender.
